I can’t see a barrel ceiling in a ranch style house but vaulted for sure

I have downsized to a ranch, also, but ceilings are high, so I spent my money on other things, instead, but maybe consider a tray ceiling? I have trouble with "too high" ceilings in ranch houses as often door/window casings were sized for the lower ceiling.

Whatever you do within the space has to look right within the context of that particular home. I might love a barrel ceiling in a kitchen, but it might look utterly bizarre in your space. The package has to be looked at as a whole. To pull elements from other homes and think they will work is a bit misguided. It goes without saying an architect needs to be consulted here.
