The first cotoneaster picture shows a fire-thorn instead. As according to Fryer & Hylmo (2009) C. buxifolius is "very rare in cultivation" the one shown in the next picture may actually be another species. Many wild cotoneasters from Asia have long been grown in western cultivation under the wrong species names.

I did consider Pyracantha but it is seldom planted around here and that group of photos came from a garden that did not have Pyracantha on its plant list. However, to some extent, seen one Rosaceae berry, seen 'em all!

Cotoneasters are a mess and the birds don't help. This one is sold around here as C.buxifolius. If it's not, I have no idea what it actually is. I have half a dozen plants, purchased from two specialty nurseries. My suspicion is that their source is the same. Happy New Year.

Well then I guess they need to add fire-thorn to their list because that is definitely what that plant is.

I suspect birds again!

Thorns would tell whether it's Cotoneaster or not.

Not in my soil! Nothing that needs acidity. No Pieris, Enkianthus,, Oxydendrum, Skimmia, etc. :-( not a lot around here either due to soil or shade/water needs.
