Astraea, don't quite get where you are coming from on the property question.
You know the funniest thing now is when my joeys all come home they have often have neighbourhood friends here and talk about old times and growing up. Suddenly all the things they never told "mum" come out. I remember one time there was a crowd here and my eldest and the boy who grew up over the road were laughing over the time he and my dd went for a ride on the road on his newly acquired dirt bike (which was illegal) came down the hill, he lost control and smashed into the fence of the house next door. They were having a great laugh when dd suddenly looked at me and her face froze ........... ooops, you didn't know about that one mum.

Kutchie, I wonder if the know it all generation today will actually bring on another depression. Something has to give sooner or later to let the world correct itself. I remember when my joeys were in their teens, I saw a bumber sticker one day that I threatened to buy

"Hire a teenager today, while they know everything"

OK so the paint colour - colours just won't come out well in photos but here is the idea - the current blue which isn't quite right and the two greens I am about to choose from. They actually are two different colours, one has ochre and the other black. I have just put a third coat on and the one with black now seems to be coming out cleaner. Painter has decided he will definitely do a full undercoat first - my testing helped him there.

    Blue! Blue! Blue!

Roo - you had posted about a discussion where someone had bought a vacation property, but then didn't know how to set the rooms up for use. I just meant that I didn't understand how someone could buy property, without already having a vision of what they wanted to do; without that vision, how would they know that was the right property to buy?

@olldroo. Work until you get the blue color right. The green looks too "hot" and you certainly do not need more heat!

roo? Something on the floor, too?

Roo, you haven't said much about how your painter is doing?
Sorry Astraea, now I am with you. Maybe in this particular case, location was more important and he is prepared to spend money on it. I mean a two bedroom house for 6 adults and 6 kids is pushing it a bit. Has to work out just how he wants to use it before he can really do anything and only he would know what he wants.

Ooooh ez what have you done - and you are the quiet one too. :)

Thanks for the input guys, the colours haven't photographed well at all and they don't look any better on the paint colour chart online. I can see what you mean ez but the green on the right is actually a paler shade of lime green so anything fresh like that isn't hot at all, it is a really nice summer colour, but not drab in winter either. The room faces north so gets lots of good light and winter sun - although I think we are losing that thanks to stupid neighbours and their trees. I did find a really pale blue that matched the fabric exactly and wasn't as strong as the blue I have which I did want to tone down, but then on the wall it went grey and daggy. It can be very misleading matching fabric to paint and then how the paint actually comes out. So thank you for your help and input, but it is going to be green - hopefully when the room is finished the colour will be more accurate and I can get better photos.

Love that rug Judy, and fun for a kids' room too, but the room will be fully carpeted the same as the rest of the house and as it is such a small room, I really want to leave the centre open to hopefully give it a more spacious look.

Gosh I hope I don't sound negative and unappreciative here, you guys are all fantastic and it is nice to have others to run things by, especially people who know and understand decorating.

Bobbi, I don't think you would want to know how the painter is doing, it is sickening. I haven't said much because I can't keep up with him. Yesterday he did a heap of sanding back in one room, undercoated half the woodwork, all the ceilings, and the walls in two bedrooms and the walk in 7 hours work. BH and I collapsed when he left, we were exhausted watching him and he makes it all look so easy too.

I laughed this morning, I asked him if people often asked for his help in deciding colours. Said they drive him up he wall with their expectations. One time he put himself out to suggest a colour scheme for one home which the owners were quite excited about. When he went to start the job they had decided to stick with their existing colour scheme. Another time he got to a house and they had about 20 colours chips stuck up around the walls - he walked out!!!

I love it! I would walk out too! Danger Will Robinson!

Roo, I like the green on the right. Colors are hard and never photograph well. My grey changes color throughout the day.

Interesting day here for news. We're expecting heavy snow on Thursday, so that was the big headline until a restaurant exploded down on the plaza around 5:00. Fantastic place, so sad what happened. Sounds like they had cleared all patrons out before it exploded but the employees got hit hard. Appears to have been a gas leak. Its a miracle more weren't hurt!

    Have a good night all.
roo... I like the green with the ochre.... it gives a nice warming effect to the undertone and when the sun is shining in will look great.......but then that's my personal opinion. When ever I do renderings I always start with a sun yellow or ochre wash..... it helps warm up the finished product and keeps the cold colors from being too cold. It's a more realistic representation of outdoor colors.

Hey bobbi, can you come over here and talk to this lady about Rustoleum please?

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/help-with-this-craft-room-please-dsvw-vd~358278
  • 13 years ago
Thanks Tras, that is the one I have gone with. Talk about Speedy Gonzales, the painter has now undercoated the entire room and obliterated my samples - barely let them dry.

Kutchie, know what you are saying, I am certainly understanding more and more about colour. The paint with the ochre in it kept drying more and more yellow, where the one with black stayed really true with the green. I wanted to keep it a definite green as the hallway outside is yellow. BH is having a yellow room too. He is totally useless with colours. I had painted the hall this yellow colour years ago and love it so no reason to change. It is called Cowardly Custard. The hall is in the 1/2 strength so BH's room which faces south and is THE most miserable room in the house will get full strength to hopefully keep it a bit cheery.

So we are all done and chosen and the painter was going to call by the shop on his way home to pick all the colours up. At the moment all bedrooms are white undercoat, looks almost eerie, but he hopes to really put some colour in our lives tomorrow.

I think I am about to be made redundant - BH jumped at the painter's suggestion that he undercoat the bathroom and toilet doors for us while he had the undercoat out and then added the rest of the woodwork, then when he was painting the timber, he suggested it wouldn't be a big deal to put a coat of paint on it too and BH jumped at that. Now BH has decided he will see if he will finish the walls as well. Looks like my painting days are over, except for some furniture I want to do.

I am so sad, I may even become depressed, what is my life coming to, how will I fill my days!!!!!
Roo, your painter sounds like a nightmare! I mean, really, sanding and undercoating and painting! Whatever was he thinking, making it look so easy?? I'm so happy for you, you picked the right guy and it's going well. How will you fill your days? Chocolates and soap operas? Resting and relaxing? Long walks on the beach? Oh! The dilemma!

I'll check the Rustoleum link for you.

hahaha bob! how wonderful that roo hired the right guy for the job! she WILL have to eat bon bons or something!
well, we have the new baby girl....so far so good. she's a love. I am naming her Dali.......J doesn't like it one bit, but that's gonna be it I'm pretty sure.
It's like she's always been here. very strange....didn't cry last night, has peed and pooped outside when I've taken her. And she's not supposed to be housetrained yet?
i need to make coffee NOW! what am i doing up this early!!!????? oh my
  • 13 years ago
MP, cool name! What did J want to name her? Dali is perfectly appropriate! What ARE you doing up so early?

I have no idea...well, I think it's the mother instinct maybe. Taking my baby out to the yard!

OOOOH, I like Dali, sounds like good karma. Of course she would be clean and meticulous, she is a female after all!!!

Thanks for checking out Sassy for me Bobbi, I keep forgetting you did tiles but from the undercoat I used I'm pretty sure the same undercoat works on everything.

Heck, how to fill my days................ I still hardly know where to start.

Can I just unload my day so far.... ok, so silence indicates acquiescence!

I had a building meet today for the start of another bathroom renovation. I always get extremely nervous before these - a) because I am an English foreigner in a French speaking environment b) because it is a very macho environment around here (sorry Roosters) and I can get walked over very easily and c) I am actually very timid until I get my bearings so, when I should be asserting my territory at the start, I end up letting others take the lead - which is difficult to regain later on.

After a sleepless night, this morning's meeting did go quite well and there are a few issues to iron out now we have got everyone who is working on the project together. But I feel totally drained. I didn't realize how much adrenaline I was pumping as I had to open the meeting and start going through the planning issues and various possible problems. While I love what I do, I realize it is the personalities of the people you work with that can make or break the positive progress of a build.

I think I am going to play hookey this afternoon and go for a drive with hubby in the countryside just to reset my self. I wish I didn't get this worked up.... and for what???!!!
Anyway, tomorrow we start the destruction phase which I love as we get to see what is under the skirt - so to speak.

There, unloaded. Thanks for listening and have a great day/evening
  • 13 years ago
You should def go for a drive with hubby! You need to unwind and feel better about your day. Don't let the turkeys get you down!!!
Mp love Salvador Dali, always been one of my favorites, Persistence of Memory has been an all time love but many many moons ago, right out of school, I tried painting the Christ Of St John of the Cross because it was sooo dramatic. That was the last time I tried to paint until a couple years ago (obviously it didn't go so well).

Here's a video of the explosion that happened at JJs last night. Terrible.

Hope everyone has a great day. Mine will be busy getting things done because school will most likely be out tomorrow.
Heard a little about that explosion Tras, said staff had got all the diners out before it happened but it didn't sound like staff got out. How bad was it?

Talking about disciplining kids too, on our news tonight a shopping centre near me has banned screaming kids. Seems the idiots built a kids' play area right beside the food court ........... now let me see, parents and kids sit down to eat, kids have the attention span of a fruit fly so quickly forget their food to play in the play area while parents sit eating and chatting and generally taking no notice of kids, kids scream when playing so everyone eating has to put up with the screaming. Obviously designed by a male - AGAIN!!!!
ASV, I know exactly how you feel. When I was working, I would have days like that. I was in sales in a very male dominated industry. I would always tell myself, it's just a day of your life...only a day, you can do it. Silly I know, but I did. Funny, because I also worked part time at Ann Taylor so I get get the discount on the clothing, on the weekends I didn't have my daughter. Purchased many power suits so I could go toe to toe with the men. Many times they didn't know what they were talking about anyways. Sorry men! No offense, but in the printing industry you really needed to know process and capabilities to sell. Most of the time they would make empty promises, drove me crazy.

Take a drive with hubby! Clear your head! Don't let them get to you. Remember our strengths, you can multi task and organize in a way that will make heads spin! :)

I think we all must of had crappy days yesterday, I did too and I think Bobbi, you said you were crabby?? Do I remember that correctly? Hopefully today will be better.
Let's all just remember, yesterday was the easiest day......

tras, dali is my favorite artist! I even did a portrait of him. when J and I went to sarasota we went to the dali museum there, and i literally cried while staring at his paintings. incredible.
and here's me while bored and painting one day. I went all dali on myself! you can't leave me alone.
Lol, Roo, so true. Just experienced that at McDonald's the other day with son. There was a group of 5 little girls just screaming their heads off. There were about 5 parents in there. Two of the moms were talking on the side together, looked over at me and mentioned how terrible the scream was. Then 15 minutes later, 15 minutes of absolute torture, the same moms gathered up the girls to leave. Ok, I'm sorry, you even talk about how bad it is, but yet you do nothing about it. Unbelievable. One thing I learned a long time ago, sit and eat where there are no distractions...then go play. One grandma argued and fussed with this little two year old boy because he wouldn't sit and eat. Uh, yea, he's not going to. Eat in the main dining area first, then bring him in to play.

From what I understand, there were about 19-20 in the explosion. Around 6 in critical condition and one unaccounted for. They had difficulty getting accurate numbers because they were taken to three different hospitals. I haven't watched today to see what they've figured out. The patrons had just left before it blew. Truly amazing more weren't hurt. The way it sits, it's surrounded by commercial and residential buildings. Very narrow streets.

Good morning. My handyman came this week and recaulked the bathtub surround, and replaced a defective ceiling light fixture in a bedroom.
I have finished spackling nail holes in the walls, and started painting over them with primer.
I fixed the inside of the window area in the bathroom (a tension rod had pulled off paint), and then primed. There is no window trim/architrave, only a windowsill with an apron under the windowsill. Wow! Having that area primer white sure makes the room bright! I might just paint that area with white paint, and the windowsill and rest of the room in Rainier White to go with the rest of the apartment.

actually i think most of my clothes may be considered pajamas now that I think about it!
Tras, that sounds really bad, they said they removed the patrons because of the smell of gas but surely they should have had something better organised to remove the staff too. Didn't see anything in the news this morning.

Some time ago my neighbour and I were at at large shopping centre and we stopped to look at a store when this young couple strolled by with a kid maybe not quite 2 who had the most ear piercing scream and he was on full volume. The poor little thing looked absolutely exhausted, yet neither parent was making any attempt to carry him or do anything for him and they had no pram for him. I mouthed my disgust to my neighbour and a older woman I didn't see beside me really went off the deep end. She was the grandmother but it turned out she wasn't venting at me, she was absolutely furious at the parents too, said they had been shopping for 4 hours with this poor little bloke tagging along. She agreed with me that if they had a pram, he probably would have been sound asleep by this and they could have continued their shopping in peace - as could everyone else.
Astraea, too funny. We've had our fair share of good and bad ones lately. Sly is still a little wet behind the ears, fairly new. Can't say much about him yet, except I love his name (a bit questionable for politics though). But, I didn't elect him, we are in the suburbs. KCMO elected him. We did have a fabulous mayer awhile ago. I didn't agree much with her political stance, but she did do a lot for the city. Really helped revitalize downtown. We are still in process of it making a come back but she really got the ball rolling.

Roo, there's still mixed stories about what happened and time frames. Last night they were saying the original call, due to gas smell, was around 1:00pm but the gas company didn't show up until 5:00pm. Usually they are super fast so don't know how accurate that is. But there was construction going on outside and they believe the crew hit a gas line. JJ's staff smelled the gas and asked the patrons to leave. The way it sounded last night, the patrons had just left before the explosion. The gas company had just got on the scene when it blew. They first went across the street to the doctors office and told them the levels were way to high and to evacuate. Crews did find one body today in the wreckage. They are searching hard and fast, big snow fall expect to start this evening. Terribly sad on so many levels. There's lot of investigating going on, believe you me. It was a fabulous restaurant, had been around for over 26 years. On the upper scale but not too large. The employees there had probably been there for a long time, I would assume a tight group. I'm sure they are all having a very tough time right now.
That is sad Tras, and sounds like a stuff up on a few levels. Hope they get to the bottom of it soon and really kick the appropriate butts.

You are slow today - we are well underway on 2/20.
Yea, I've been trying to get the bathroom started before snow begins and little one keeps me pretty busy until school starts. I jumped online to see if I got my final figures for mirror/lights but sales rep is taking his time on this one. Starting to get frustrated.
Does the little bloke do a late start at school?

Nothing worse than waiting on people to get back to you, particularly when you are busting to go. You know I'm still waiting on two paint quotes - hahaha the job will be finished before they get back. God this guy is amazing.
yea, he goes afternoons which work out great for us.

This sales rep is driving me crazy. I'm trying to be patient but it's not working. I called yesterday to let him know I had emailed my requests, he said he would get to it as soon as he could. We want to use him because we get the military discount but if I don't hear anything tomorrow then I'm calling a different rep. That's funny you are still waiting on a few quotes and your painter will be done before you get them. Your guy sounds great! Wish I could use him. I have a wall that I'm going to have to hire out for. I'll take a pic of it sometime and show you. It's a really weird angle over the stairs, I would never be able to get a ladder to it.
I'm really impressed with your school system for the little ones. When Miss 6 started dd put her in the 8am class, which meant dd could get things done at home and she was home well before lunch and they had the afternoons free to do things with the little bloke or she also learns piano and does swimming and gymnastics. Probably does other things too I can't keep up with, I know she was playing baseball and soccer and the latest I heard was basketball - she loves playing with the boys at school. This year they do the full day but still stagger the class start. The first week they all did the same hours but Miss 6 was half asleep by the end of the day so she got the early start again. She is very much a morning person.

It is weird when you hear people are screaming they have no work and then others don't even get back with quotes. I learned years ago not to wait around. Wonder if your rep is that busy - trouble is if you start to hassle them they can did their heels in and drag it out more. How did you go with the sparky? Is he doing the extra work for you??

Warren would probably love your job - he has already got two more leads just being here. Actually I just asked him if he would like a trip and he roared laughing, couldn't believe I was chatting to someone in the US.
That is too funny, tell him I said "hi" from Kansas and that I sure could use him when I start work upstairs. I haven't called the electrician yet because I wanted to get lights ordered so they would be here for him but unfortunately it looks like a couple of more days before I get that checked off the list.

I haven't watched Property Brothers in awhile but I am right now and this couple is totally spoiled. This home is unbelievable, incredible potential with beautiful kitchen cabinets and they are totally demolishing all of it. At least they could have recycled them. They were in great shape. Usually the homes are sad and really outdated but this one is nice and only needs cosmetic work. Oops, scratch that, they just found mold from a leak but still the home is not that old and amazing potential. All they can do is cry about the tile.
