Salvia 'Indigo Spires' - branches die after prune?

It seems like every time I deadhead a done-bloom, just below the bloom at a leaf joint, the entire branch dies. Is this common for Indigo Spires? This 10 yrs.+ plant is in full sun. Other types of salvias I have no problem with. TIA

The small short dead canes from previous prunings I have noticed are sort of creating the plant to be 'pushed away' from the middle area, making the outside branches more prone to laying flat.

Are your pruners sanitized between prunings? I'm wondering if you are infecting the branch/stem from dirty tools.

Could be. I will try a bleach dip next time. The same pruners are used for roses, shrubs, etc. Only S. Indigo Spires behaves like this. Thank you.
