C'mon Spring

The cold weather is finally here, and it's snapped me out of the 'ho-hum' fall is going on way too long doldrums I've been in. I found these photos from last spring which I meant to post a few weeks ago, so before I go back to work and forget what free time is, here they are. Anyone else thinking about spring? Just (if we're lucky) 2-3 more months for the Northerners among us!

Earliest spring: snowdrops

and some fancier snowdrops

snow crocus in the lawn

cyclamen coum, winter aconite, and snowflakes (leucojum)

scilla mischtschenkoana (you bet I googled that spelling)

big fat hybrid crocus come out on the first warm day

corydalis solida come right after the crocus... plus a bunch of scilla siberica and chiondoxa which might someday be a pretty blue weed.
hyacinths start blooming and then you know it's fully spring!

And then spring hits. primroses and fritillaria meleagris... I'd rather more of the dark checkered ones, but the white really took off.

    and daffodils :)

and for about seven days the camassia are perfect.

and the daffodils keep going... and tulips. I didn't even get as far as tulips.

Anyone else have a few pictures? I've gone through my own so many times it's getting boring....

Katob, what an amazing display! The daffodil bed.... I aspire to such abundance.

April 1st 2014 - Tete a Tete next to my front door. There should be much more this year. I already see them poking up.

A few weeks later, the first flowers of my new sidewalk bed (new 2014). I spaced them about a foot apart so I could plant perennials between.

    Close up

New bed extension lined in daffodils. A pink trumpet mix in the back. Leftovers from the front walk in front. First year 2014.

Purple Sensation alliums covered the waning foliage. One of my better choices.

Posie you are going to have more daffodils than you can imagine in no time at all! They look great. If you want too many let me know, all the ones I pictured should have been divided last year... except for the ones in the last picture, those I did dig and many rotted during a damp spell last summer.

I like the alliums, I don't have many and that's something I should work on, and the fence really sets them off. I have vinyl here and hate the plasticky white of it...

Katob, thank you for the encouragement. :) I would love any extras you have. They would be far more appreciated as a gift.

I was admiring your low stone wall. It's a lovely backdrop. Maybe once the kids are much bigger, I might upgrade my fence to something less functional but more esthetic.

The purple sensation is pretty cheap and the bloom doesn't last as long as the sterile ones as it sets seed pretty fast. I deadheaded this year's blooms in an attempt to help the bulb store energy for this Spring. My older ones have slowly petered out.

hi guys, Harley here in Cincinnati Ohio. I have been thinking about my bulbs ever since I planted them in mid November. I got some Alliums this year, Globmasters I think and some Hyacinths. I can't wait for them to pop their little heads out of the ground & say i'm here.

I don't know about 'C'mon Spring'. We haven't really had a Winter yet. The temperature this morning is about 50f and there are plenty of Daffodils in bloom already. I took down the Christmas tree and put out the flowering Daffodils in the window boxes on the same day this year. We haven't had cold but what we have had is rain, in over-abundance.

Pictures or it didn't happen flora ;) Have mercy on us shivering people!

Here's the proof Posierosie - the Daffs still have lots of buds to open but they've definitely started. I have no idea why it is posting sideways. Sorry.

Karen, I will be fickle and sigh over the pastel iris palate against the strong pink of your peonies. I really enjoyed that contrast. I am tip toeing into Iris and seriously looking at peonies.

Floral, thank you for the window box picture (and humoring my slightly obnoxious request)! I remember last year's progression. It's exciting to see it get started so early.

Oh wow, those peonies and iris... wow. Now I'm thinking I should have taken better care of my iris last year and not let them get crowded and overrun with other plants.

Daffodils already, now that's something. I enjoy the explosion of spring but there's something to be said for having early blooms and things coming along all winter. Except for all the rain. We're having rain this weekend and after two days I'm done with it. I won't say this too loud but I'd actually rather have a nice snowstorm and then a bright, cold, sunny day.

I keep reminding myself that day length is slowly creeping its way back.

I did bring in an early snowdrop last week.... the thought of having it freeze dried last week was too much for my conscience.

Plus I wanted to be able to see it as often as possible :)

A single snowdrop isn't much, but it sure makes me smile!

That is so cool, katob! I didn't know that you can pot them up and bring them inside for blooms. I have to do the same with some of mine that are starting to grow. Thanks for the idea.

Floral, it is so awesome to see daffodils in January! Are there other plants blooming for you at this time?

Thanks Posierosie. I wish I can say that it is done by design. Over the last 2 years, this bed had grown 5 times its orginal size so the plants are a bit all over the place. Did not expect to be bitten so badly by the plant bug!

"Bed has grown 5 time its original size" :)

Karen if you bring in any snowdrops I like to wash all the garden soil off and pot them up in gravely, quick draining soil. They're likely to rot otherwise.

    Thanks katob!

Thanks Katob, for the perfect antidote to a dreary day.

    A few of my favourites:

    Flee, winter, flee!!!
