How should we update the entertainment nook ?

Our entertainment armoire is outdated and only holds a 37 inch tv. It's also tricky to close the pocket doors with the current tv which "just" fits. We'd like to update area and go with a bigger tv ( 40-50 inch) but I'm struggling with how to make it look completed. I like the idea of a console of some type but I'm worried about all the wall space around the tv since the height of the armoire won't be there.

I don't think you'll have a problem if you get a proper height media console. I personally really dislike the low media consoles that are designed to put the TV at couch-level viewing. If you hang a large TV from the wall over a taller piece of furniture, such as a true sideboard or a media console that is sideboard height, you will fill a lot of that vertical space. Check out some images on Houzz- search for TV console or something like that in Photos. Sometimes people put sconces on taller accessories on the surface.

Just be sure the furniture you choose is wide and substantial enough to balance the visual weight of the TV you get.

Seconding CF's tip about the scale and width of the console and the sideboard height. I don't think you need to worry much about the height compared to the current armoire; your dark wall will make the TV disappear against it when it isn't on, especially if you choose something with a similar sideboard height.

You could do one of the wall shelves that Pottery Barn and others have and treat it like an accessory mantel, but I don't think that's really necessary.

Based on your present set up, in which you have filled in most blank areas (which armoire alone on that wall would have been enough), it looks like you like to have more than less and a good way to address the wall then would be to build shelving that completly surrounds the tv and fills the wall. The units below are too large obviously, but you could start with a low black console or two level pre-made bookcase that reaches from wall to wall and then on paper (to scale) start doing a few plans on lenght and size of shelving, until you get the look you want and adding them should be too big of a job and paint shelves the same color as the wall.

think 'bookcase-flanked window seat' where the tv is the seat and storage is built around it. this can be accomplished with store-bought bookcases with trim added. the unit breaks down easily to repurpose the pieces when your tv changes sizes. painting it black is a great idea, then your books and accessories become the art.

Our tv is on the wall and we got an "industrial" look console table underneath (needed a place to mostly store throws and magazines in baskets) and it looks really good.

I plan to do a plank wall behind the console and tv, the width of the console, floor to ceiling to establish a "finished" wall space the tv is on. This will fill in the space around the tv and make it feel like a piece of furniture without the bulk. Matching plank shelving can be added to the planks if we decide to, but I don't like clutter, so maybe not. This is in our second tv space and is a casual space.
