I should add - we are in a 1930s brick rambler. I love the look and feel of older homes. Trim will be white.

Also, I read a article (on here actually) about the "7 percent solution." it mentions that with 8 foot ceilings you would use 7 inch trim?? That seems very odd to me, anyone have any thoughts on that?

Don't believe everything on the internet. One of the persistent amateur mistakes is to disregard scale. Or even basic appropriateness. You unfortunately see a lot of that. Not every home is improved by throwing molding at it. It's not always an ''improvement''. Sometimes it's a remuddle.

I'm also debating on baseboard height. Is there any rule of thumb to follow? I'm trying to achieve a mid century look, but like a tall (5") baseboard height. I've worried it is too craftsman to go that high. I've got 8' ceilings pretty much throughout.

I have a MCM home and we went with a very simple 4” baseboard all over painted to match the walls as 50’s woodwork was not anything special so I never hi-lite it

some pics of my dining room and part of my living room. having trouble w lighting...hopefully these give an idea of my style and space!! My house isn't huge and although I love bold trim, I don't think my house is big enough to "handle" it.

Cora / Coral The top photo is where I would start. Your new sliding door should have top molding to match the window (black blinds)...the "top lines" should be even. I'd get an 8 foot piece of MDF the same height of the top molding and a piece of the smaller add-on, glue it together, paint it white, tack it up over your existing baseboard and take a photo. Sometimes it's easier to see the proportion in a photo. Very attractive interior BTW.

our house has 8' ceilings on the second floor with 10" skirting boards. those crazy victorians!

Could you measure that baseboard that you have, looks to me it's 1.5 inches high. If that's the case, I would do 4" max, 5 might be pushing it?

Just measured my own and with 8 ' ceilings my baseboard is 5" and looks proportionate.

thanks for the advice! I added the top pieces to the windows/doors a few years back to give it a little more substance and just never got around to above the sliding glass door. (it's on my giant to-do list!)
I currently have 2.5 in baseboards throughout the home.
