So I just wanted to talk about growing fuchsias indoors. I noticed
browsing here that a lot of people say 'don't do it, it doesn't work.'

I
live up in Northern Minnesota, where its too cold to grow anything
other than snowmen for 6 months of the year. That means my garden comes
on inside. And today I was picking and eating my fuchsia berries, all
done indoors.

So-what do I do?

Lighting-either
a south window or a west window. Make sure they're getting plenty of
light. If you live farther south you may not want it as direct as I
have mine, but where I am the sun is rather weak, so they are literally
in the window touching the glass.

Water- once a week.
Yup, keep them on the dry side. Except when you first bring them in.
When you first bring them inside from a summer of growing outside, keep
them happy and medium-moist, after you:

Chop the crap
outta it. Yes, I take a scissors to my fuchsias, and chop chop chop.
4" long stems the first year. The second and third year the lower stems
get thick and woody, and those I keep at about 6-8", as all the growth
is off of smaller stems from the main ones.

Feeding- I
did feed mine this year. Yeah, one of my fuchsias is 3 years old,
second year indoors in the same pot, and I've given it fertilizer once,
about 3 months ago. Its not blooming a LOT but its starting to
re-develop buds.

So why does this work? I more or less
threw it into a new growth cycle by chopping the plants back
drastically. That's nothing new with the fuchsias. People do that all
the time! The difference is people try to keep them in full-summer time
routine indoors, and you just can't do that. Let it grow slow. Pull
off the blossoms until December. Let it truly just form new leaves and
stems.
