Seating six at an island requires a huge island with space to pass by on both sides. Draw up a floor plan, then see a kitchen designer. There may be other options. Talk to a local real estate agent if you are concerned about reducing your house's appeal or price by making the kitchen visible from the front door. In my area, that would cause a significant reduction in value. YMMV.

No fear, open kitchens are great! There are ways to hide countertop messes with an island. I know you said you don't have enough room for an island, but check out my island design guide, one of these island arrangements may work out with or without opening up to the living room. Hope this helps :)

Hi Shippy, although I love open concept especially with an older ranch of that size, I draw the line on having your front door open to a view of your kitchen. Apple pie's reply clarifies the problem perfectly. If you still want to do it in spite of the reasons above, a raised bar height countertop would be preferable.
