I live in a 1929 Colonial Revival home listed with a Historic Neighborhood. I would like to keep close to historic as can be but still be effective...We have a 2-story stairway "hall" with one very large 8/1 historic window. Walls are painted Wendy's chocolate frosty beige with white trim "Tiffany" blue and black accents. We love the light coming through most of the year and have no window coverings or treatments - just a window. In the winter it can cold and drafty. Temporarily we hang white cotton duck fabric over the window (not curtains, just the fabric). It is convenient but not historic or attractive. I am open to advice on window coverings that will be aligned with historic traditions, and still allow the beautiful sun to come in while diminishing the cold drafty-ness that is living in an old home.
