I need names of trustworthy manufactured home insurance companies

    Foremost is your best bet.

State Farm will cover newer homes, with serious restrictions on things like roof, furnace and water heater age, and if they don't already cover more than 1/3 of the MHs in your area (or something like that). Insuring a MH costs more than it costs to insure a similar house, IME.

Other companies will sometimes cover MHs, but I am unsure of who they might be, or what restrictions they have.

Thanks. I am beginning to wonder if it is even worth buying other than liability. I am hearing so many stories from people who have trouble with MH insurance paying. I have been told by another insurance agent, that since I have a 15 year old home that if anything catastrophic happens to it that it will be replaced by another similar home of the same age/price. I was under the impression on my policy that I would get a lot more funds than this. Read the small print.

Yes, that is how it works. Even with stickbuilt homes you run into market value versus replacement value, with replacement value insurance being more expensive. I have replacement value, and do I ever pay for it. But then, I did replacement value when I owned homes, too. A nice old farmhouse might be worth $100K if it was being sold, but cost $250K to build it today.

rgossage1, I have Farm Bureau. I have a doublewide on a block foundation. If I remember correctly that's a requirement and you also have to insure your vehicle with them. Also, there is a "consent to rate surcharge" basically giving them the right to charge whatever despite being regulated. However, I do have good coverage and at a decent enough price. When it came up for renewal a few months ago I couldn't do any better. I also have replacement value.

edit: my home is 15 years old.

Thank you. Mine is a singlewide on slab on my own land in a suburb and I am charged almost $1600.00/yr which seems excessive to me.

Yes, this is exactly why I am shopping around.

rgossage1, may I ask what state you're in? Is your home considered real estate since it's on a foundation on your own property? I would think that if so, it would be easier to insure. I agree with cathyyg, Foremost is a trusted name in insuring manufactured homes. Many people on this forum have and/or recommend Foremost. I have heard that Geico insures some manufactured homes. I have my auto insurance with them, and have always had my renter's insurance with them. This week I'm planning to check that out, so I'll post again and tell you what I find out. My MH is very, very old--1979. I bought it for $2,000. I mainly want to insure my belongings inside, and I'm pretty sure they can do something similar to renter's insurance, even if they won't insure the home itself. I want replacement value too, which I've had in the past. It has taken many years to acquire what I have, and I don't want the "garage sale" price, I want what it would take to buy it new today. Once I begin the remodel, I really would like to get the home itself insured because I'm going to be spending essentially my life savings on refurbishing it and it will have a lot of nice stuff like all new floors, all new appliances, new roof, etc. that I would not be able to replace myself if tragedy were to strike. Anyway, I'll update on the Geico thing as soon as I find out. :-)
