How will the tiles be laid? Will they be staggered? I love them & think staggering them would be best. I like your choices for the vanity & sinks. Are you sure you want to keep the mirror clear accross? Are you changing the lighting?

Thanks, Sandra. Yes, the tiles will be staggered (offset?), horizontally. I have the LED pendant light below to use in the bathtub room, but I'm on the fence about whether to keep the current lights over the vanity. Would modern bathbars on the sides look better?

As for the mirror—I suppose it wouldn't be a tragedy if the mirror did not survive the demo. What sort of mirror(s) would replace it?

I would change the lights above the mirror Since you are going with something more modern, I would do either a different bar or sconces if it's not too expensive.

If I hang them one on each side, do you think they would cast enough light over the entire 8.5-foot vanity? Or should they go over the mirror like my current light fixtures?

'Bathroom Vanity Lighting: Measure the length of
the bathroom mirror (or mirrors). That number will be your limit for the
length of vanity bar lights. Many people choose vanities that are about
75 percent the length of the mirror and then mount them centrally. If
you have multiple sinks or a very long mirror, you may need to chose a
bar with more lights or even use more than one bar. Allow for 3 inches
between the top of the mirror and the bottom of the light fixture if you
are using a bath bar. We do recommend using sconces on either side of
the mirror instead of a bath bar for the most ideal light, but also
understand this is not possible in every bathroom.'

This is super helpful. It looks like if I go with side-mounted lights, I might need a couple of recessed overheads in addition, as in the photos above.

yes, you would need recess lights in that case. We are doing a bathroom in the basement and I chose to have a recessed light and back-lit mirror..it was either that or sconces

Here's what we did for a similar double sink set-up (due to the layout I couldn't get the whole sink in the picture - second sink is blocked from view by the linen cabinet on the right side). Inspired by a Houzz photo that had this set-up, we framed out the mirror instead of replacing it (thought about separate mirrors but couldn't find anything we liked with the refinished custom cabinetry -this saved $ too) and put LED lighting across the top. It has been awesome lighting at the sinks. If you notice the glow on top on the left side of the build-out, we put LED tape lights on top on a separate switch for reflected light. It's awesome especially at night when you get up to use the bathroom and don't want the blinding "normal" lighting. Just one more idea!

Thank you Tai! It wasn't very expensive. The contractor just built a light box, using decorative molding and trim to frame the sides of the mirror and give the front of the box a decorative look, and stained everything to match the cabinets. The original inspiration photo is still in my idea book if you are curious. Looks like I just tagged it "mirror." It's the one with makeup area on right in the photo. Good luck with your design!

I've made some decisions on lighting and mirrors and would love a bit more feedback. Demo starts tomorrow!

I've decided to take out the long mirror and put two round IKEA Ronglan mirrors (31" diameter each) over the sinks. I'll take out the funky bath bars and put in three 4" LED downlights in the ceiling.

Where I'm stumped is additional lighting around the mirrors. I love the look of this light from Schoolhouse Electric (to put between the mirrors). What do you think? Clash?

I realize it's a little retro and I'm doing the bath in a more modern Scandinavian style, but the modern bath bars (George Kovacs, WAC) look so generic to me.

Also, will one light in the middle of the mirrors be adequate? (I do have a small lighted makeup mirror that I use for makeup.) Do I need to put lights on either side of the mirrors as well?

Lighting is turning out to be the hardest part of this remodel!

My contractor seemed to think I should use 6" downlights, since we have 9-foot ceilings. I'm not crazy about the look of those larger cans, however. It seems like most of the recessed lighting I see in Houzz bath photos are 4" lights. Would you agree?

The 4" are actually a good size..they are not as big as you think. I have them in the basement for the bathroom as well..one above the vanity and three along the middle of the room (the ceiling is 9' tall as well). You can look at Juno lighting to see some nice trims..the 4" come in square as well
