Either turn the rug or get a bigger size. It looks like you can just turn it to designate the living room space. It looks awkward flowing out into the room like that.

What is the space across the fireplace , next to the sectional? a passage way to another room? I agree with puertovixan that the rug looks awkward sticking out of the room.

If you are trying to define the sitting area, then get a rug that fits just there. Otherwise, you will need a rug that covers most of the flooring in the room to bring the room together.

I would try first sliding it under the sectional and create a defined sitting area (like Tems suggests). The rug might be too long, it is hard to tell on the picture

I think you need a bigger rug then. It might not need to be so streched if the seating doesn't hug the walls.
