Foyer suggestions

I don't think I need much for the foyer. We have a mudroom, so shoes and jackets are removed there. Mostly this space is decorative.

My thoughts are for the labeled spaces:

1 - beautiful piece of artwork that I already have (too bad for that lightswitch...)

2 - 2-3 drawer cabinet

3 - leave that open or small stool/chair? Something decorative (would need to be sturdy in case a child bumps into it)

If I place the artwork and cabinet as labeled, it would face the front door. That makes the most sense, right? It seems awkward only because that wall is the shorter dimension compared to the wall labeled "3" - maybe I am overthinking that. I could flip flops the ideas for what to put at "2" and "3". Thoughts?

Thank you!

If you decide the wall is too small for a small chest or round table , you could put a nice bench on wall 3 for guests.

This is just to show the scale of the space. The end table is 25" in diameter.

Looks small. Maybe a demilune table against the short wall? You can find them with a drawer.

Agreed. If I go for a round table, I think I could easily go bigger in diameter (and obviously it would be taller too).

Still keeping all options open....if I go for a cabinet, how does this look style wise? (assuming the size is ok)

That's pretty, but maybe too feminine for a Craftsman home. Do you shop the antique stores?

I'd look at corner cabinets because against either wall it will be awkward, I think. I think you need something coming out at an angle in that corner, so either a corner table/cabinet or a round table.

Not this color, but just the idea:

This is a sweet little cabinet on Craigslist. The photos are terrible, but note the carved trim on the doors in the last photo.

You'd probably want to refinish a piece like this and make it look new.

    Cool captain's desk . 40" wide and 20" deep.

    Stickley Gus corner table

Do you like Stickley? It's a heavier look. I don't care for Stickley seating--too rigid--but the small pieces are nice.

We bought a tiger oak buffet server in town with some Craftsman influences. It has decorative doors though, which is what makes the piece special.

I don't have any Craftsman furniture in the home, but I know it makes sense with the design of the staircase. That Captain's desk is amazing - probably too big for the space but I wish I had a spot for that one. I haven't shopped the antique stores yet.

If you don't want a table or chair for some reason, a beautiful large floor plant would look nice there. I love plants in rooms, I think they bring color and life to the area.

Not Craftsman, not a corner unit....but a pretty oval table with marble top? Craigslist find.

Hmmm, the dimensions of the table top will fit well in the space but I'm not sure about the height. It is 29" tall and the wainscoting is almost 41" in height. That seems too short.

I think the problem with a corner piece, in your particular corner, is that it will make hanging art on the wall very awkward. Wall 1 is quite large and a corner table won't fill in below something hung on it like a chest or straight piece would. I think round could work if placed correctly and large enough.

Just saw your oval table post. How tall is the end table you placed in the space for visualization?

    It is 24" tall.

Olychick - the placement of the artwork did influence my original plan to place something on wall 1

Maybe you could use your little table for another mock up - set it on something to raise it 5" and maybe some cardboard to mimic the width of the marble table, just to see?

This is .5 inches taller than the table.

    last modified: 10 years ago

does that help you visualize the oval table in the space? It's just so hard to tell in a pic. I think the space could use a larger and taller round table without interfering with passage, but that oval might work, too.

I love that black painted piece you posted up above. IMO it has the most personality and would bring a lovely presence to that corner without overpowering (or being overpowered by) the architecture. Your house may be craftsman style but the painted woodwork says something very different from the heavy and somewhat unrefined wood pieces proposed. Just MVHO :-)

    Lovely home!

Olychick - it did help in person. I think the marble top table is too short. Too bad, that would have been fun to solve this in one day (and for a good price).

Haven't found a corner unit that I like. Currently looking at small demilune console tables for wall 1. I think this one is nice.

kswl - Haven't ruled out that black piece. I think it is pretty!

I like the demilune. Is it bigger than the small table there now? I like the black piece too. I don't like the oval table and would rather see a small chest or console table with a drawer. Your home deserves something special.

The demilune console is 2" shorter and 6" wider than the black piece. It would be great to find some special piece of antique furniture....it seems so daunting/time consuming to find such a specific thing!

Just a thought or maybe inspiration for your area. I am obviously talking about the round table and its decor.

I am enamored with the black painted cabinet you posted. It is elegant and simple. The curved lines would soften the straight lines in your millwork. You have a lovely entry, I'm anxious to see the end result.

Dimensions of the black bombe chest:

    32" H x 25.25" W x 16.75" D

I don't think you want to go any shorter than that if the wainscoting is 41". So a chest seems like it'd be the best bet.

I do like the clock that nightowl posted, but that style is too primitive for your home.

As for the plant suggestions, I'm not sure we get enough year-round light to maintain an indoor plant. I'm nursing along a pothos in my south-facing window. I'd let it die but it's probably 30 years old.

Someone has already mentioned an area rug, and I think that's a very good idea, something with a bit of color to give life to that space. Perhaps the colors might complement the artwork if that has colors in it. The space is beautiful but needs to look more welcoming, and color is a great way to achieve that.

Totally agree about the height of the furniture piece, and adding a rug. Probably wouldn't do a plant because the poor thing would die a fast death. :)

I like this table (craigslist) but maybe too simple. Might be too short (30"). Still looking!

Pretty! I am going to check the dimensions tonight. The only possible issue is the length.

I still think a chest is the answer, for the height and storage. You probably need to keep it under 30" wide, right?

Here's a close-up of the bombe chest. I'm going to guess that the top is only about 20" x 8" because of the edge. Keep that in mind if you are planning on a lamp. I liked this the best of all the chests on Wayfair.

I would say 20" is probably the smallest it should be, 30" would be the widest.

I don't know if this is a style that would work for you. My daughter has it and likes it a lot. She had the same problem finding a small chest. It's great for display and storage. Chest

28 inches wide and 35 inches tall

I would put a mirror in wall space #1 - that would give you a good chance to check yourself out one last time before you leave the house.

Haha, still in the lengthy search for a cabinet for my foyer. What do you think of this one? I like it...not sure if I love it. It seems a little plain, but the dimensions are 100% perfect and I am having a heck of a time finding something tall/skinny/narrow in depth to fit this space. I would lean towards the brown one, but there is an aqua one that might look good next to my living room that has a greeny/beige feeling.

Here is the living room right off of the foyer:

    Thank you!

The cabinet would go on space "2" with a picture above it - this is what you would see as you enter the room from the front door. Maybe a small chair or stool in the corner where "3" is.

    last modified: 10 years ago

I could definitely see the brown one there if the dimensions are perfect. I like your idea for a picture above and a small chair or stool in the #3 position. I don't care at all for the aqua piece. It's just too distressed IMO and doesn't suit the pretty, classic look of your space.

I don't know how much height you have in that corner but something like this would look very nice there, and would not detract from your wainscoting, this also comes in black, cherry or white but it is 63" high? found this on Overstock.com

I was thinking the green cab would add a nice contrast to all of the wood.

I like the green one, too. It has some personality and the other just looks like...meh...to me. I'd love to see a real vintage piece or antique there, but it's probably a difficult thing finding something just the right width and depth.

I love your house and I especially love the trim! I'd rather not see a round table because it takes up too much room, doesn't offer any drawers, and I only like round tables when you're able to walk around them, personally. I also think what you're trying to maximize is the vignette you see when you open the door. I don't think a round table does that. Lastly, The trim the door etc., is all very linear so I wouldn't want to introduce something curvilinear.

When I immediately thought of was a chest of drawers with mirrors or art leaning and a wonderful Chinoiserie lamp. The reason I thought of it is because I had a crush on this particular lamp for a long time. What's really funny is that several posts above, AKtillery posted this exact vignette I'm thinking of, which came from someone's blog! She posted it to recommend the round table in the center of the room. If you look at the back right hand corner of the room, that chest with the lamp and the mirrors is exactly what I would put on your wall opposite your front door.

I have to see if I can find a better picture…

    eta ... Here it is

This is very close to what I want my foyer to look like (except that I don't have room for any furniture). I would love a chair in that space, with some kind of horizontal surface to temporarily place things on. Here is the inspiration pic for my foyer:

Thanks for the input! I ordered the brown one....the green one was tempting but without an actual color swatch I was too chicken to get it. I'll try to add some color with accessories.

I would have picked the brown one too
