There are many Brandywines out there, and my favorite Brandywine is True Black Brandywine but, since your wife will not eat a black tomato, that one will not work for you.

Sudduth's Brandywine is my favorite pink Brandywine. I think it has the best flavor here in my garden of any of the other non-black Brandywin's (and there are many of them now), and it has a well-documented history that goes back at least 80 years in the family of Dorris Sudduth Hill, and it has been a couple of decades, I guess, since Ms. Hill made seed of Sudduth's Brandywine available to other heirloom tomato afficianados. I think that Chuck Wyatt was the one who first seeds from her and shared them with others, or maybe it was that he was the first one that made them available commercially. I don't remember now.

When I have grown Sudduth's Brandywine and regular Brandywine side by side, it seems like Sudduth's produces heavier crops than plain old Brandywine does, which is very important because Brandywine generally doesn't like our hot climate here and bears poorly most years. I've grown Brandywine on and off ever since we moved here, and even grew it in Texas before we moved here, and Sudduth's remains the best pink one as far as I'm concerned, though I'm more likely to grow True Black Brandywine (introduced to the commercial market in recent years by William Woys Weaver) just because I love black tomatoes.....so, to me, True Black Brandywine is the perfect tomato, but Sudduth's is a great tomato too.

Honestly, though, some of my favorite Brandywines are tomato varieties that Keith Mueller bred using Brandywine as one of the parents, and I grow them regularly as they yield more heavily for me than any of the old Brandywines do. They have great flavor, but aren't considered Brandywines obviously. Oh, and they usually produce earlier. Gary 'O Sena is my favorite of the Keith Mueller varieties, and I grow it almost every year.Technically it is a child of Brandywine and not a Brandywine and I know that, but my taste buds adore it. I also like Liz Birt.

A long time ago I grew Cherokee Purple, I loved it. The dark or black Brandywines are also good, of course a lot of them are so it will be a while before your pick your favorites.

Like I said above, I grew Brandywine years ago, I don't know what strain it was just Brandywine on the seed packet, I was not impressed with it as it wasn't very productive. Thank you for all the information. I would like to try the True Black Brandywine, or Gary o' Sena as I like the taste of the Cherokee Purple. But I guess I will try something different. I must clarify that it was not Baker Creek that had the 2 Brandywine varieties but Seed Savers Exchange.
