Cleaning an old aquarium~

I need help on how to clean off mineral & old water stains on an aquarium that has sat empty for a long time. I know vinegar shouldn't be used but I can't think of anything else to use especially if taken outside and rinsed thoroughly. I also have a vivarium that has sat empty for over two years. Same question. Thanks.

I'm curious. Where ever did you hear that you shouldn't use vinegar on aquarium mineral deposits? I've bought several aquariums off of Craigslist and I've used vinegar on all of them (they were uniformly crusty.) with no problems. Just rinse thoroughly after and if you are still concerned about acidity do a pH test and if the pH is too much in the acid range add a neutral pH regulator like API's Proper pH 7.0 or Seachem's Neutral pH Regulator. (Petco sells it for $8.99. See below.) That should lift the pH to 7.0-ish and hold it there.
