It's been unusually warm in NYC, things are still actively growing. But the cold finally kicked in this week (naturally, after I started my experiment) & I envision needing plant toys w/ which to entertain myself.

I MAY put these guys on warm radiators for some bottom heat since seeing it recommended here (then again, I may not). But I see the radiator kicked in under a group of Aloes & they seem mighty happy abt it, maybe the Sans. trio will like it too.

The Northeast seems to be in for some mighty cold weather, stay warm everybody & best bring in any plants you've still got out (if any).

Hi Imontestella,. I like to do these little propagation experiments too. I know you have been growing some in water too, so I am giving that a try. I have a bundle of leaves from different sans all tied together so they will stand and I have them in some of those clay balls from the pet store with just about half an inch of water in the bottom. I have one little sprout coming up.

This is my only little winter prop experiment. These are all well rooted but no pups yet.

I'm curious, where is PG? and Norma? I have been trying to find updates on both of them since I've been back. Truth be known they are probably the main reason I'm back on GW.

Woodnative, that looks interesting, you may get something completly different from those stripes.

Sorry, I don't know your first name. Nice looking experiment, looks like 3 or 4 different kinds in there. Is that back leaf S. kirkii or kirkii v pulcher there w/ the coppery tone? I haven't had that one in yrs; cool colors. Those are great looking stripes, would be so cool if the pups are variegated, Hope you'll share updates.

Barb, I'm curious. How do you keep them from mushing at the end? How long do you let them callus over before putting them in the water? Do you use any sort of heat or hormones?

A long time ago when I used to propagate cuttings I'd use willow water or aspirin to root in water. Willow has a natural root hormone that works really well with other plants. If I didn't have willow water, I'd just stick a shoot of willow in the water with whatever I was trying to root and had roots very quickly. I don't know why I just remembered this because it would have helped me a lot a couple of months ago.

Mentha, those leaves were lying around for months. I would just stick them in with another plant if I thought about it. No extra heat. Certainly not a scientific experiment. I have heard about the willow, have not tried it. Lena is the one with success growing in water.

Here's a little update on my water growing. I got roots! But my container is too low so I put them in a taller vase.

Thanks Lena,. I was so surprised to see those nice new roots, I just had to take a picture. I just hope I didn't damage any when I put them in the vase. And I hope they will grow like yours did.
