What do you usually do in this room? I think there is a lack of focus here. Do you have friends over with food/drinks? Then there should be side tables, intimate lighting, cozy rugs, interesting artwork. Do you read, maybe while snuggled up with a cat or dog? Then reading lights, ottomans to put up your feet, bookshelves, and a spot for the pet. Or???

I think function needs to come first, and will likely help with your plans. What do you want to do in the room?

I entertain multiple guest from time to time. I have a black Labrador and she doesn't lounge in that room because I'm rarely in there. I use my home office for reading. Im only in there when I have guest or a family gathering/party. I would like for it to be inviting. I would like to continue to entertain in the room.
Like you said, I really dont have a focus.

It's quite an intriguing space! The arch is lovely, the windows look like they have good views, and the furniture is quite workable. I think I am puzzled by a few items: the artwork above the mantel seems small/unremarkable. This could be a place for something fun and drawing attention. I'm not sure why there is a mirror in the corner - this draws the eye, but not in a good way. The style of the mirror doesn't seem to fit the room (could be wood framed?). There are plants, but not a lot - I could see plants framing each side of the large window - so larger and more abundant/effusive looking. There's a bit of a tropical/mediteranean flair to the room that you could continue to play up - the white shears, arch, and dark wood already emphasize that look. A few small tables, more intimate lighting on those tables, and a more interesting rug with some pattern or colour would all add flair.

I have a large black dog, too (black lab/golden mix) and I can understand why you wouldn't have her in the room much! :)

Another couple of thoughts...I think your room desperately needs better lighting. I would replace the ceiling fans with chandeliers. Also the neat chaise(?) that seems to be floating in the middle...does anyone actually sit on it when you entertain? It doesn't look very inviting. I might put a couple of comfortable chairs under the window and put a tray on the chaise to set a drink down, and use it as a coffee table/ottoman in front of them. Agree that I'd put something more dramatic over the fireplace. I large mirror might reflect the light from new chandeliers and bounce it around the room more. The big mirror in the corner is too big, right?

Lovely space. Love all the architectural details. Yes, 1st thing is an area rug. That will define that seating area and create a warm and welcoming area. All front legs of sofa need to be on the rug.

1. You have no flooring lighting. Add an end table and lamp to one end of sofa and a floor lamp in corner behind sofa.

2. Move the big potted plants in front of window behind bench or on one of the side wall and put a table and 2 chairs here.

3. Bring in the lovely bench closer to the sofa. It is lonely sitting there all by itself.

4. You need some décor on FP and on the wall behind sofa.

I will do an arrangement for you and add some décor.

I think lighting the painting above the fireplace would help bring some focus, maybe even some color, and agree about moving the bench closer to the conversation and something nice over the couch on that blank wall. The plant in the corner looks lonely, might give it some company, and a larger more colorful rug might help.

Added 10x12 rug and a 5x7 by window. Small 40" table and 2 chairs, for nice dinner by patio doors or a glass of wine , card game.

The mirror is made of magazine/periodical clippings. I purchased the mirror many years ago when I had a much smaller loft downtown. I now live in a Dutch Colonial (built 1929) and I'm trying to make sense of my space and the pieces that I have.

I totally will follow instructions and remove what doesnt make sense.

What did you think of the arrangement I did for you? Does it make sense or can I make some adjustments for you?

What color rug/type of area rugs should I select. Also, what type of chairs and table should I place by the window next to the plants. May you please provide examples.
