When was the last time it was transplanted? What zone are you in? First thing I would do is cut off all the dead leaves, banana leaves do dry up and die, but your plant looks like it might be root bound. Also, do you feed it, they are heavy feeders.

Thanks so much for the comments. I only feed it twice, I guess that's not enough. I live in Southern California and it was growing very well for about 1.5 years after I purchased it. The good thing is it is still growing quickly up but the new leaves turn brown instantly. Not sure what transplanted is.. I never touched it except to cut off the new shoots growing at the bottom (was that a mistake?) and occasionally remove the brown leaves. Those shoots keep pooping up at the bottom.

Since you live in Ca why dont you plant it in the ground, otherwise it needs to be transplanted into a much larger pot, hope that helps.

I see your plant has an attached saucer. Just make sure that it is not holding excessive water and sitting in water. Bananas are water lovers but not bog conditions. Also, what have your temperatures been like. Any chance it is due to prolonged colder/coolish temperatures? Hold off on feeding until it improves. Might transplant with some fresh soil and while you are at it, you could see what's going on with the roots and drainage. Looks like a Dwarf Cavindish, I think.

Ok thanks for all the suggestions. This started happening towards the end of Summer. It was a HOT dry summer. Hasn't been too cold (mid 60's - 70's) I just took it out of the pot to look at the roots. It came out of the pot very easily. I didn't know what to look for. The roots seem to snap very easily I thought maybe they are supposed to bend not snap... I took a picture. Also I removed a small healthy pup to see if I can plant it just incase my banana plant doesn't make it. I would like to remove 3 of the large stalks.. Its just to crowded in there...Can I do that?

All my pups died a mo. After I got them, to late to add humidifier. Would it have helped them too survive?

hottina44, it depends on the problem. If you were overwatering, no, it wouldn't have helped. If the soil was too salty, no, it wouldn't have helped. It really depends on the conditions. I it was underwatered, then a humidifier might have helped a little bit.

After summer follow up from OP. I did what you all suggested and the tree is doing well again.. trimmed the bad roots, and cleaned them up...focusing on just 1 of the stalks and the pup and put it all in cactus soil (couldn't afford the gritty mix). Back to normal. Thanks so much.

lynn is that one in the ground? That looks to be an ornamental plant not edible. you can chop the whole plant back if you want. It will either re grow or send up pups.

Yes it is. Ok wasnt sure i knew some of the bananas have gotten about 5 inches long have never gotten that big before lol

Hi, It's not salt that is the problem it's near over watering. I would lay off the water let then dry up quite a but and no fertilizer until they are older. They should make a big turn around.
