Bushes for north side, zone 6?

When I moved in 5 years ago, the original bushes (azaleas and some short round holly) planted by the previous owner looked very sparse, overgrown, and half-dead. After 5 years of trying to resuscitate them, I've given up and plan on ripping them out. Any suggestions for good bushes to plant along the foundation and on each side of the front door? I was also thinking of a dogwood in the bed in front of the foundation plantings - any other specimen trees that wouldn't get too big? As the house is north facing, it gets direct sunlight only for a few hours in the morning. Thanks!
