I received a large envelope of tomato seeds yesterday and researching the names found one to be this variety. I Haven't decided how I feel about this since it was my understanding you couldn't buy genetically engineered seeds without a contract and here someone has possibly included them in an heirloom seed trade.NPS tomato

Amy, if you received tomato seeds labeled Ruby Gold, your fine. Dawn's post indicates that the official name is Gold Medal.

Okay, now I am positive, Houz no longer gives me notifications on threads in which I've posted. Anyone else experiencing this?

The seeds were labeled NPS as per the link. I thought I would be okay with a genetically engineered plant if all the genes came from the same species. In other words only tomato genes, but the more I read, the more certain I am that I won't be planting it. I wonder if saved seeds from a GEed would come out true to the original anyway (and I haven't found any info on that yet). These tomatoes come from a British company, the first in the UK to work on genetically engineered organisms. I guess I need to trace who they came from. Maybe some one has an heirloom the abrrviated to NPS and I'm getting excited for nothing.

lol, I loved Roseanna Roseannadanna, and I'm glad you don't have the genetically engineered NPS purple tomato as it is my understanding that it has antibiotic resistant genes bred into every cell.

Do you know if your Not Purple Strawberry is even purple? Or strawberry shaped? I guess you won't know which part the "not" refers to until you grow it.

I got notifications in the beginning when Houzz first acquired GardenWeb and got to many it drove me crazy, so I went to my personal settings or whatever they are called here in Houzz and turned off notifications. Maybe your can go to your MyHouzz section (or whatever it is called, I haven't been back to that page since the day I turned off notifications) and turn your notifications back on again?

It has actually gone on my grow list. It is not heirloom, but bred from them. A cross of German Red Strawberry and Cherokee Purple. The "not" was because it was selected for heart shaped fruit which reverted to beefsteak so it is "not" strawberry shaped. This is the only commercial source I found. I will do a few extra for spring fling. Not Purple Strawberry
