Do you look closely into your brom flowers?
Hi everyone.
I know we all marvel at the various overall colours and shapes of our bromeliad plants, but have you ever stopped and had a real close look into the actual flowers?
If you take the time to do this I'm sure you'll get a nice surprise as you'll see a whole different feature of the plant from what you see when viewing it from a distance.
I'm posting this picture of Aechmea bromeliifolia var. albobracteata to illustrate what I mean and show that the beautiful green flowers are something we don't usually see. The other interesting this is that when they die they don't go brown like most flowers, they go black just to be different.
Would anyone like to post a close-up of the flowers of another plant? Perhaps we could start an album of brom. flowers.

10 years agoI got this one at a sale at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and it did not have a name on it, and the seller did not identify it for me. I bought it for the leaves, of course, but I always do look closely inside to see what else is going on.

Let me say how good it is to be able to post pictures again.
Lars - You picked a genus that's often missed as sometimes the Neoregelia flowers are covered by water; that plus the fact they aren't very big anyway.
Another interesting bromeliad is the acanthostachys strobilacea; it's unusual as the inflorescence grows out from a location midway along the leaf length (see Picture below)

It's not until you look closer that you see that they have quite a bright yellow flower (Pic. below) This plant is easy to grow and does well suspended in a hanging basket.

Time to add a bit more colour to this thread. This time with flowers from Ae. 'Aussie Ruby', Ae. 'Little Green Ruby', Miniata var. discolor followed by some from a crossing of Ae gamosepala x nudicaulis which I made a few years ago.

Ae gamosepala x nudicaulis Not exactly bright, but an unusual colour for a brom
Ae gamosepala x nudicaulis Similar to the Ae. gamosepala parent but more compact and brightly coloured
