Do you have something particular in mind that you plan to showcase there?

susanalanandwrigley thanks for commenting. no. I will have to get something specifically to feature here. just wasn't sure if I should do one niche or balance it out with two because it's quite high because there's an electrical box underneath it.

I also have the option of removing the niche altogether.

How deep is the niche? What is your style? Contemporary of traditional?

Reason I ask is because that will help me to answer your question. I.e. if traditional, then I think you could do a frame around it to give it a feeling of it being bigger and doing two same sized niches (if they fit or possible) and placing books in there with like a little plant or small accessory.

If contemporary, you could do a really cool stone inset with texture, like a split face ledger stone. Run led light around the perimeter of the interior of niche so the stone glows. Place a beautiful wall covering on the front main wall and return.

To answer your question, yes do a secondary niche, because it will look odd having just one so high.. Or scrap all together if you're not really feeling it.. It's really about what makes you happy..

You could build out a narrow cabinet (5 or 6 inches deep) below it, which would give you a nice landing spot for keys, etc when you come in the door. Add a plug inside to make a charging station for your phone.

Are the sides even? Left side looks wider to me.

thank you so much for all of your suggestions! this is a century home that is being renovated to more of a transitional look so contemporary but not ultra modern. it's not possible to move it down because of the electrical box but I can add another one the same size with a potlight. or I can keep one and perhaps put a very small console table underneath.

Since you don't have something specific to showcase in the nice, I'd put up a solid wall. You can hang artwork; clock; mirror - so many more options with a solid wall.

Nix the niche and if you want something there get some art to hang .

I would go with 2 rather than one and if possible the bottom a little longer. Could you do a little pendant light in them and make it light feature? Just a idea
