The screen can be vertical ( if you don't have floor space), going side way. Then you tie the branches to it horizontally.

thanks, just stumbled on this thread while looking for a horizontal support for melons. Looks great.

Last year I just happened to have a discarded roll of fencing about 6ft high which I cut into half round pieces 6ft by 3ft or so, like a tunnel, and positioned the cut edges on the ground and the round arch supported my tomato plant. I used 2 of these for one plant which was a monster tomato plant with large cherry type tomatoes that I think are called salad tomatoes. Anyway, If you are concerned with how your garden looks then give my idea a pass because it does not look neat and tidy but works to keep the plant and fruit off the ground. I always like to let one of my plants sprawl and grow wherever, just for the fun of it. This does not seem to effect production of fruit.

yep -I use those arches of wire as tunnels to hold up my cut flowers for sales. They work great up here in the cold if you put them in early and cover them with poly or frost cloth. Way better stability for the covering than just single hoops.

nope- I am not concerned at all with a manicured garden, so I think I will try some for my tomatoes, way easier than making individual cages and with the grid of the wire 6"x 6" it is easy to weed with hoe or hand.
