Nice! What zone are you in (7a or 7b)? I'm pretty sure if the palms are covered, the fronds and heart will stay at the freezing point only, not the temperature of the air. You should also consider getting a Windmill Palm. I have heard they do well in Virginia.

I think as long as they are covered in snow, they will do well. The problem is actually when there isn't any snow!

Is this their first winter?

It's like the principle of the igloo. When closed up the air inside stays at freezing point even if outside is way below.

You should really cover the fronds in the snow. They can tolerate the snow, but it isn't good for them and the snow can break the fronds.

It is beneficial, though, to have at least the heart covered in snow, especially in the deep of Winter, as it will keep the heart at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and no lower. That way, the palm will be able to last until Spring.
