Followup question - I am ordering the chandelier and pendant but could I ask the electrician to get and bring the recessed lights? That way we would both know they are the right kind? Also, will an electrician know where they should go or do I have to decide that? I don't have much experience with this. Considering doing just chandelier over dining area, one pendant over sink and 6-8 recessed lights. Area is 20 x 12. Would eliminate one flushmount fixture. Does that sound ok?

The standard 4 tube fluorescent light fixture has an output of about 11,000 Lumens. A 6" recessed will put out 1,100 Lumens at the most. A 4" recessed will only put out around 600 - 800 Lumens. That means you will need about 10 - 6" recessed cans to make up for the light you are replacing, or 14 to 18 - 4" cans. Another way to figure out how many you need is by using 300 Lumens per linear foot of counter top in the kitchen. That would be 24" - 30" spacing for 4" cans or 36" - 48" spacing for 6" cans over the outside edge of the countertop. Recessed lights are directional (down lighting) that will create more shadows than the fluorescent fixture if put in the wrong spot.

Your electrician can supply the recessed lights, but you need to know what size and lumens before you can decide how many you need and at what spacing.
