Hi there. I use either 3/4" clean or 1/4" minus almost exclusively for paths. Which I use depends on the site conditions - minus packs down and is great for slopes, but is not as permeable so you can get more runoff.

For a driveway, it depends. If its flat, you can get away with clean but keep in mind it can be hard to roll trashcans etc because it only packs down a little. I prefer the way clean performs in summer though because there is much less dust than with a minus gravel and I think its a nicer look. If your parking is sloped, you may need to use a minus in which case 3/4" minus would do the trick. I do like granite much better than basalt - the two readily available gravels in western WA. Shine Quarry just over the Hood Canal Bridge may truck over to Whidbey. Good luck and I love Whidbey!

Thank you for your timely response. Our yard is sand down to about 8 feet. I am not sure if that makes a difference in our options as well. Do you have any other suggestions for cost effective ways to fill our space with something very low maintenance? We do not want to mow any grass. We would love to just keep it sand but we know that the weeds, etc will eventually start growing back. It is not a big space. I have attached photos for your review. Any help would be appreciated!!!

I suppose the other option would be to look at some of the coastal natives. The native dune grass - Elymus mollis- grows in pure sand and requires little care though weeds will still show up. Ditto for the gravel unless you line it with weed cloth. Sand under the gravel does not make a difference - even better for drainage!
