Friends do not grow tomatoes because they have wild critters who devour them. They are very casual gardeners who do not want to bury the edges of large wire cages in the ground for protection. I offered to provide them hanging baskets.

The objective is GOOD TASTING tomatoes. I don't think it is worth the time and money to grow bad-tasting tomatoes which are so easy to buy in the grocery stores.

Sunset magazine recommends Saucilito for hanging baskets. I absolutely can't find the seeds.

Of course, I am looking for shorter plants. But I don't want determinants because the tomatoes in baskets are to eat all season long, not for canning. Also, determinants tend not to taste as good. That leaves shorter indeterminant cultivars for the baskets.

I eliminated Suggary, plus Fantastico that Parks now recommends for baskets, because they are determinant and AAS. Unfortunately, AAS has always meant "very easy to grow but no taste" (Celebrity, Juliet, etc.)

I will provide two 12 inch baskets of reliable Tiny Tim as backup in case the bigger baskets don't succeed. It is the only determinant I ever grow because it is so cute loaded with fruit even when grown in a small 3" styrofoam coffee cup. I know it will be fine in a basket, but it is determinant and not the best tasting, so I want to test something bigger, also. I don' t like Red Robin as well as Timmy. And I will never again grow that bad-tasting Tumbling Tom.

I am considering Sun Gold, Rosalito, Sweet Baby Girl, and Gardener's Delight for the big baskets. Also, 4th of July is rather small and quite good-tasting.

I plan to plant two 16-inch baskets this year and maybe increase the number in the future if it is a success. Which two do you think would do the best in the baskets? Also, do you know of other short indeterminants that TASTE GREAT?

Has any of you succeeded with ind cultivars in a hanging basket? Any actual experiences would be appreciated.
