Home-made planters?

Has anyone made any type of large planters? I have a number of plants that need dividing, and, nice as they are, don't want to spend upwards of $100 for more large ceramic pots. I've thought of planting in plastic bins (like recycling ones) and building a surround out of marine plywood that can be painted and would hide the bins. Building those are well within my capabilities, but the plywood is pretty pricey, and not sure how long it would even last in this climate. I thought of casting concrete pots using a couple of plastic pots as forms. These would last much longer (I hope), but the little experience I have with working with concrete hasn't gone particularly well. My house is kinda formal, so I'm not looking for anything "crafty" looking. Any tips, ideas, suggestions?
