Avocado pruning?

last modified: 10 years ago

I started growing from the seed and the initial stem died because it was next to a window, in Oregon its too cold. I decided to bring it to my room and noticed after turning on our small lamp it sits under that it started a new stem and was growing significantly. Its now about a foot and a half! its different than other pics I have seen. It only just started growing leaves so basically I have this really long stem and 3 leaves at the top with a few more just sprouting. I can see small areas down the stem that look like they will grow leaves bit some looked dead and fell off when I touched them lightly. I decided I should pinch off one of the leaves to help it grow so I pinched one at the base of the leaf. I wasn't sure if I should take the whole stem with it so I just left it. Now I have two small leaves and two more that look like they are about to open. I could hardly bare to take off the highest leaf, should I pinch another? This is not like any of the videos or other plants I have seen. It took so long for it to start growing leaves I don't want to kill it.
