Please help....Maple Fungus/Bark Cracking

I am worried that our Maple has a serious disease. My wife says it does and wants to have it removed, but it is the feature tree in our backyard and I only want to do so if it can't be saved. Please see pic. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. This disease was present last year and i scraped the fungus off and the tree did bloom in spring and summer. We are in Northern California.
