You have a pretty common problem with multiple cause and cures.

Your feed dogs are gripping the bottom fabric well but the top fabric is dragging against the bottom of the presser foot-take the presser foot off,clean & dry it and give it a little buff on waxed paper. It may slide just a bit better.

There is too much pressure between the feed dogs & presser foot-look for an adjuster,either a knob on top or a dial inside the compartment where the post is. Not all machines have this adjustment, do you have a manual?

You are trying to sew different weight fabrics ie firm drapery weight fabric to a lighter weight lining- this one is tough. You can use ton of pins, you can start sewing at the center of the seam & go up-return to the center of the seam and go down.

And last but not least,pushing-pulling-dragging. Don't force fabric in,don't pull fabric out. Don't let lengths of fabric hang off the back of the machine-use a card table or a chair to catch the weight.

And, the best for last- get a walking foot.If you want to sew a lot of long seams for drapes or quilt it will be your best sewing buddy. It works with your feed dogs and grabs the top fabric in unison with the feed dogs and feeds it through evenly.

Thank you so much. I messed with it again today and did as you suggested on the adjustment. (There is a pressure foot adjustment.) It helped significantly. I'll "wax" the foot and see if that solves the small residual drag. I also have a new 1/4 inch foot, so I'll change to that one and give it a "wax" job if needed.

Good job BK ! The older Singers are lovely things and if you keep it clean and oiled it will serve you well. I have a T&S 626, the pink model. Sews like a dream :)

Now, you need to go to that closet, the one that has the 778 stuck in the back ;o Drag it out ,make introductions and do a dual oil & primp. You can put the 1/4 inch foot on 1 and a walking foot on the other. Who knows, you just might be able to take over the world ;)

I already did the dual oil and primp on the 778. I started on it. I knew it really had no problems other than the foot drag (I'd forgotten that at the time.). So, I got out the book and started cleaning and oiling. Then, I went to the 758. (I still have all the attachments, books and accessories that came with the 778.)

The 778 is pretty heavy and it's a portable, which puts it at an unhandy height. (I'm short, which compounds it.) Then, I really don't have anywhere to set it and leave it up. It's oiled and primped, though.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. (Come to think of it, it's just common sense, of which I had none.). I'm sure my quilt will turn out really well now.

Hi everyone. chickemama, I have a T&S Singer 626 like you. was given to me. I've been working on it for a couple of months. I only sewed in school 2 basic things over 30 yrs ago. this machine was jammed. I cleaned, oiled all medal gears. I threaded it, and it worked. was having fun making different designs, different colors. All of a sudden it jammed.Was trying different ways to fix it. I even loosened & tightened screws. I started looking on U tube. I know I messed up timing. 1st, I never knew your only suppose to turn wheel towards you, also, i found out your not suppose to touch set screws to Bobbin. Been trying to set timing with needle (top of machine) & Bobbin, bottom of machine. Been trying to line up needle to Hook. I got it to pick up Loop, then when I continued turning wheel, the needle is not Lined up right, cause its touching medal. I took out needle. I think i messed up red button that automatically fills bobbin cause nut & washer fell off. I put it back on, now when I press button, the bobbin area isn't raising up & down anymore. I have been trying so hard to fix this!! : ( Can anyone help me, Please??

Hi Leena,

There is a stack of non metal gears on the upper right side. It sounds like you may very well have a tooth or 2 broken in that stack. I would suggest a repair person at this point.

thank you chickemama. I will take top of machine off & Look. Do you happen to know how I can talk to "childstar", Richard Beman? He was in one of the discussion rooms, I forget. He was talking alot about my problems. I think he said He use to work on singer t&s machines, but is retired. His last comment was from last year. This is the 1st time I have joined "houzz". I'm new with all this computer stuff.

This is a message for Leena Sunshine.. The gears are more than likely broken. The majority of the "620" series had the new "plastic" gears which deteriorated over time. Only a few of the "first run" had metal gears, with the #626 having been made with more metal than others. You can replace the gears with new ones, but they will also in time need replacement.

Hi childstar, thanku for responding. I have still been obcessively trying to fix it. really Luv this mach. keep trying to time it. Lining up Hook to needle. found repair manual on line. keep lining up 2 lines on needle bar. some say u can just barely c bottom Line, & its set. others say top line? anyway, I just took top off,& looking at the plastic dark brown gears or is it cam stack? on top right of mach. i dont c a tooth broke or missing? everything else on machine is medal, except for that, which is good, right? wouldnt i be able to tell by looking at it to c if its broke? or, do u have to take it apart? (singer co. said just to look at it, its around $ 80.00) I have been looking at thrift stores to c if they have any sewing machines. the other day they had a newer cheap plastic one for $29. but, no needle to test it. I only want one like mine. Im gonna bring a needle, thread, material, & screw drivers, so i can test them : ) there was a real old black vintage one for $99. Dont like them at all.( I just want to sew so bad just to have something Happy to do.)

I know you like the #626 because of the pink front panel, the #628 was the most happy shade of turquoise.. But both machines were 85% plastic geared. Try and find a #600 0r #600E, which were the last of the metal geared slant needle machines. If you like the #626 you will love the #600 machines. And you can use all your bobbins, feet and accessories. You should have the "professional" buttonholer (or the "Touch and Sew" buttonholer-same ), I have seen them on E-bay for as little as $5.00. The buttonholes are better than the most expensive Bernina. Re-gearing the #626 will cost easily $200.00 plus, because it is so difficult now to find a competent repairman who can do the job.

Yes, I like the white & pink,(turquoise one was so pretty too), and it looks like a good quality machine. everything from way back was made strong. now, they make most things fragile. I remember when i first came in here I read you said the 600, & 600E machines are good ones. I would Luv to get one, and that works too, (ha, ha) what if a private seller sends u a broken machine? how can u trust it? an elderly lady i talked to the other day in the thrift store said she has a couple machines in her attic she will give me cause shes 84yrs. old, & her kids got her a tiny simple machine. that sure would be "GOD" if one is a singer 600E. I have alot of Faith in HIM that He will help me get one. : ) But, i cant believe Ive been working on this singer for months, & hours an hours. Its hard to let go of it now. I bet if u were around here u could fix it. All the information u wrote to help people, youre so intelligent!! Youre such a "BLESSING" helping others, & giving your time.
