I was shopping at HD this afternoon and of course I had to check out the plants. They had several Carnosas that looked pretty nice until I started checking through the pot. There were lots of dead leaves laying on top of the soil. I also noticed it had a smell to it that I have never smelled before. Not sure if it was the plant or the soil. It was faintly sweet and musky. That's the only way I can describe it. Has anyone else experienced anything like that?

Did you look close for flowers? "Sweetly musky" is how I describe the flowers of pubicalyx, and to me, carnosa is close but more muted. But I've also noticed that when EA plants are kept too wet, the soil has an unpleasant smell... but as you describe it, it doesn't sound unpleasant to me...

Interesting. I'm guessing it was a combo of the organic matter breaking down and the wet soil. OR, some super fancy smelling rot. ;)

It was a Carnosa tricolor with no flowers. It definitely was an EA plant so I'm guessing it must have been rot. I'm not familiar with the smell of rot (which is a good thing) but I sure know it now.
