Are you sure you want to use 8 ft doors with 9 ft ceilings?

my ceilings are 9 ft and I have 7 ft interior

doors. imagine how little room there would be between the top of the door and the bottom of the crown molding in this pic.

In my opinion, I would go 8 ft doors with only 10 ft ceilings. Will be having 9'4" ceilings on first floor of new construction and looking at 7' doors or 6'8" with a transom window.

7-0 doors regardless of the ceiling height.

Our house has 9' ceilings -- 9-1/2' in some areas -- and we have standard height (6'-8") doors. It looks just fine and the proportion is good. I don't think it would have been a design improvement, and might have looked pretentious, if we had gone for taller doors.

I think of over-size doors as most appropriate for commercial/institutional structures and for $20 million penthouses in New York. I know others on these forums have other views, but I don't think tall doors are necessarily an aesthetic improvement, particularly with ceilings that aren't much taller than standard. Standard doors with taller ceilings will help accentuate the airiness, while taller doors will fight against that.

Save yourself some money and stick with standard height doors. It's a good design choice and you won't regret it.

I'm not home and can't remember the exact height, but we have 9-foot ceilings and taller-than-average (?) doors. They might have looked 'skinny' if they were not all 36" wide. They are also three panel, making them look even broader. Since we planned to paint anyway, we used the manufactured product -- heavy, very satisfactory.
