New dining room furniture... Now what?

New Scandinavian modern table, coupled with all the old stuff we have. I need advice and examples for paint (to get rid of the old world feel) curtains, lighting, chairs, rug, and artwork. What to keep, what to scrap... Going for a modern collected Scandinavian feel? I'm not a designer... Does that even exist?

    What a great
dilemma to have! It's almost from scratch, but you know what your starting
point is. The first thing that springs to mind, obviously, is to repaint the
walls -- so let's look at possible colour schemes. If you look at Scandinavian design a lot of the rooms are blinding what, which I don't think is so cosy, so perhaps start off thinking about an ivory or off-white, something warmer and softer. And then think of bright pastels to bring it to life.

The deco buffet is gorgeous but I think it does not belong with that table.* As the pic above suggests, though, if you want to go to the trouble your wooden chairs could certainly be repainted to fit. Much lighter, brighter curtains, of course -- white sheers might work if you have enough else happening in the room.

    * If on the other hand you do want to keep the buffet -- you might be able to by going for a modern Scandinavian sophisticate rather than than a modern Scandinavian rural look. Then the buffet and table could work together. Do you want to do that?

This is an interesting inspiration picture.

I actually was looking at those chairs. I would like to keep the buffet and the tables. Not sure what else to do. I know that I am not into cold contemporary but I'm at a loss as to pull everything together, or if it's even possible. Our tastes have changed over the years and we have a very "collected" home.

Table's base and sideboard feel more art deco, so not sure how a Scandinavian look will be achieved. To get an eclectic look though, I would paint the walls cream or white as a good backdrop, remove the chair rail for more simple lines, no rug, add some graphic art above the sideboard and you will need new chairs. Look for a style that sort of combines modern/art deco/Scandinavian for that collected look - like the look below - clean but graphic. It you aren't great at decorating, there will be a lot of trying/testing and returning as this may be a bit difficult. Good luck and just take your time getting the right pieces.

    Hope this helps :)

I appreciate all of your ideas and comments! So, I could blend the two styles with black chairs cream walls, a little greenery? How about curtains and rug if I go this route?

I think you should keep walls and curtains light and neutral...like in the pics. You might not need a rug. You could put a mirror or art over your pretty console :)

    Oh and don't forget a chandelier :)

Hi weatherstark! Agree with Rina, what an interesting, fun project! You've gotten some very good advice and direction so far.

Really like the Scandivanian, Danish-Modern look....and integrating it in the eclectic way that you're trying for. Here are some articles from Houzz that could also help give you some more ideas as to how to achieve these styles.

I think you should remove the chair rail. It doesn't fit with the look you're going for. As for colour, it appears that the adjoining livingroom is a light blue. A co-ordinating blue-grey would be very Scandinavian. Here's an inspiration photo:

Replace the curtains with something light and airy. A couple linen panels with white sheers behind would work nicely. And take the carpet out.

If you paint the chairs gloss black to pick up the colour of the console top, it will do for now. But I think you'll want to buy new chairs in the same colour and style as your table.

Some lighting ideas.....though please do share the diameter of your table, room dimensions and ceiling height. Knowing these things will help better pinpoint the appropriate size/scale for a new pendant or chandelier.

PS....a couple of the ideas above have only 1-bulb. So if your space needs more lighting than that....those particular fixtures may not work.

Some rug ideas from West Elm. Both styles are offered in a rectangular or round. Not sure what size you have currently....but the round does appear to be a good fit for your space. :-)

Love the idea of the wishbone chair especially in a Scandinavian style dining room. Here's another alternative to that chair - somewhat similar style but also offers a fabric or leather cushion seat.

Sunbrella fabrics are available too...which makes it easier to maintain than other fabric types....but still a bit less cost than leather.

Another chair idea from Room and Board....offered in a variety of fabric or leather or just a wood seat. Also some nice finishes available.

This discussion is just lovely. I think you encapsulated it well with "blend the two styles with black chairs cream walls, a little greenery" -- and curtains to match walls, and a rug something like the ones Avery posted, and art. I like the bright colours Poonam has posted against that light, neutral background. Pastels are also very Scandinavian.

The room is 11 1/2 x 12 with 8 foot ceilings. Curtains open to a 3 season porch. wide opening leads into the living room (which also needs work).
I still have not found curtains for the kitchen...
Would I use the same fabric for curtains in both rooms since they are adjoining or does it not matter?

Curtains like roman shades would give a sleeker look to replace ones you have now.

One thing I'm concerned about is removing the chair rail. The upper half is textured wall while the lower half is not. Will this be ok?

I wouldn't remove the rail, simply paint the wall one colour.

Chair rails and Scandinavian in my opinion don't work together , Scandinavian decor is simple and smooth . I would remove the chair rail ,I know that a little bit of repair will be needed to fix the walls but at the end you will be pleased with the results.
