Resurfacing cabinets and adding drawers

last modified: 10 years ago

Has anyone added drawers to existing cabinets? Not the roll out kind... I am considering changing out a coupe of cabinets to drawers if possible, and resurfacing all the cabinets, they need some tlc. Considering having it done, I don't think we have the diy skills. Does anyone know if installing drawers is possible, if so any idea of costs?

I am in the Houston area, if anyone has recommendations that would be great as I don't know where to start....

I'm sure the pros on this board can weigh in here, especially with regard to faceframed vs. frameless, but a box is a box. If it has four sides, you can add drawers.

I am pretty handy, and I would do it myself. I don't know what a handy-man or carpenter would charge to do something like that.

We did that to two cabinets on either side of our range. Worked out great.

Any input on costs? And if anyone has recommendations in the Houston area that would be great! I don't think we would be able to do this by ourselves...

Better to get quotes for both but I don't think you'd be saving all that much if you plan to resurface/paint and change to drawers.

Depending on your cabinets, full overlay vs frameless, that might not be be possible for many of the cabinets. Changing to drawers means you also need new door fronts for them. Afterwards you might want to change the hardware, backsplash, add under cabinet lightning, etc.

All can add up to $$$ that might be better spent on a forever home or remodeling from scratch.

We moved into the house about a year ago, I Iike the granite, backspash, layout etc. The finish on the cabinet is a bit worn in a few places, but its almost new on the inside. i dont envision a full remodel, nor do I see us moving for several years atleast. Posting pictures to give a better idea. thanks!

I dont want to change all of the cabinets, maybe a couple, and refinish

might be hard to get the same finish in new DRAWER fronts. You can go to Hafele and take that DOOR off, fill in the hinge holes at the side, easily . Attach that front to a roll out SYSTEM...many available. Easiest solution.

I am looking to refinish the existing cabinets as well, would it then be easy to get everything to match? I have some spots that show wear

what are you refinishing to? what you can do with SCHERR's...is send them a small drawer front and see what they can do to duplicate it, with the newly refinished Drawer fronts, if that's what you want. They build the insides too..

Initial thoughts are a light grey stain, I want to try and keep it not too dark as the kitchen is in the middle of the house with no windows
