Tiny vintage powder room needs something

My 1939 powder room is TINY! The sink was here and I added a polished nickel faucet to fit. Removed the vinyl floor and had hex marble installed. My carpenter took paneling from where he widened the dining room openings and made wainscot where horrible broken, dingy square tiles had been. The upper walls and ceiling are plaster, repaired.

The old 19xx roll-up shade will go--my carpenters temporarily tacked it back up after painting the window.

The light fixture is new, Livex with seeded glass (took it down and cleaned it after this photo).

I'm just now able to use it since the renovation and something's not working. Maybe it's because I had a fabulous powder room in my previous home!

Not sure if I like the SW Tidewater (which is awesome in my upstairs bath and my laundry room) walls and ceiling with the white wainscot.

Should I paint the wainscot in Tidewater, too? I hate to pay to have the entire powder room repainted, but maybe another color that goes with this house?

The powder room is in a tiny hallway between the living room and the sitting area (that used to be the old kitchen),

Thanks!

I can't even get in there to take good photos! Panorama attempt:

Close-up of marble floor:

Pottery Barn mirror was the only one I could find that was narrow enough to fit over the 18" wide original sink. There was no good place to hang the towel ring. It looked odd under the window.

I cleaned the Livex fixture after taking this--it was full of dust from the construction!

I think it looks nice! maybe some type of curtain & some wall hangings will make it feel more cozy....

I think it's a cute space! The towel ring or the brown towel seems off to me. Did you consider a towel bar on the wall across from the sink? What about changing to a white towel?

I think, tho, the room is missing the era-appropriate contrasting trim along the top of the wainscoating. However, I see the cap is also your window sill. Painting it all black might not work. Hmm.

It's raining today, but when the sun shines, this room gets the best light in the house!

Since privacy is needed only on the lower half (the window is high above the back deck and yard, I was thinking about a cafe curtain.

I have been pinning valances that I thought might work, placed above the window so that just the lower half covers the window:

    This one in the aqua:

Or, go bold in this big check to pull colors from marble:

    Or....just plain white!

Love the floor! Agree, re: the Tidewater. It's blah. Get a bolder color in there and leave the wainscoting as it is. Look at BM Caponata. Someone else here did their powder room in it, she also has wainscoting, and it is gorgeous!

I would also sew a skirt for the sink, which is right in line with a vintage bathroom. Pick a fun fabric.

I'd also skip window treatments altogether and put a cool film on the window.

I've been wanting to paint it in a high-gloss BM Lavender Mist. Look at this paneling with black & white marble! The top of the wainscot is also the window stool. That could be painted in glossy black.

Could you hang a towel over the commode? Because of the wainscoting, any towel bar has to be high enough or project enough to clear the ledge. Hanging it opposite the sink means drips on the floor.

The towel is grey and white, but looks brown in the photo. It's what I have on hand, other than bright white.

I'm funny about fabric things too close to the toilet. I don't want a towel above it, nor do I want a fabric sink skirt next to it.

It's a nice little room already. The paint color looks good in the photos but I could see how going bolder would work. If you don't paint, cafe curtains (and maybe a sink skirt!) along with some art to brighten it up.

(Hey! I have that sink too! It's a great sink.)

Oh, my goodness - yes. Paint those upper walls Lavender Mist! That is an absolutely wonderful color. But again - please don't touch that beautiful white wainscoting! (I sound like a broken record.) With the lavender on the walls, the black and white check shade would be dynamite.

I would not paint the whole wainscoting black. Instead, paint the bottom of the wainscoting an enamel white and the chair rail of the wainscoting a high gloss enamel black.

Oh, oh, go with BM Vintage Charm. It'd be stunning.

I like really like everything about your bathroom except for the towel ring (and where it's located). I don't have a great suggestion though as to how to solve that... Part of it could be that I don't care for towel rings in general, and especially in "period" baths, but even a small hook might seem crammed in that location. What about to the left of the mirror? Is there more space there? As for the paint color, that's so personal (I think the color you have is nice), but just about anything would go with the classic color scheme (black/gray/white) you have in there. I wouldn't paint the paneling; I just prefer classic white for bathroom woodwork.

The toilet is inches from the sink on the left side and I don't want a towel above the toilet---just wouldn't seem clean!

Maybe a towel hook would be better if I put a row of vintage hooks, rather than one, below the window?

I think a natural Roman shade would be great on the window.

You did a great job on that bathroom!

Skip the towel thing altogether, get a cute wall envelope or some other kind of container, and keep a stash of bath napkins in there. That's what I did in my powder room. I have one like the first pic here but with the second pic's roses design on it from Ikea attached to the wall. My powder room is also vintage and tiny.

Maybe a wall-mounted shelf w/ some hooks under it?

I like it as is, but a color that you might not use anywhere else, would also be great. So if you like the Lavender Mist, go for it. Or an apple green? (Personally, I love navy).

As far as the towel, some ideas:

could you just get a hook?

Or would the towel ring fit between sink and toilet?

Or a bar above the toilet?

Shelf with basket with hand towels on the window wall in the corner

a bar or hook on the sink?

or pull-out bar to the left of the sink

I have the same setup in my tiny powder room and ended up with the same towel ring. As often as the towel ends up on the floor (kids!) no way would I have it over the toilet!

I wonder about hanging a towel on the front of the sink with some sort of adhesive/suction cup setup. You wouldn't want it to LOOK like an adhesive/suction cup setup though, which is the problem.

The guys are working and I just asked one of them to take down the old window shade and patch the holes in the woodwork.

If the plumbing inspector would show up today (after NOT showing up last Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)...then, my renovation would be complete and I could get a certificate of occupancy for the master suite.

Hang a smaller ring, a little lower, and use a fingertip towel instead of a hand towel. Or, how about a wall vase or two? You could even hang them over the commode because the vase would protect the towel.

I think it is the towel ring that is the issue. You could paint 100 different colors and that fowl on a ring will still look odd

I would hate to have to hang it below the window through the wood but that is a better place for it. And then I would hang an art piece with a black frame. I like the white window film that was posted as well

I could put a glass shelf above the toilet and use disposable hand towels as mentioned above.

But, my grandchildren, standing on a stool to reach the sink, would never be able to reach the shelf.

The problem that I have with the towel ring is that it is too large for the space. I have the same issue with the faucet, which appears to be too big for the sink. So I would suggest a smaller towel ring, hook or adding the bar to the front of the sink as in nosoccermom's 2nd photo.

Your powder room is quite lovely as is though. The wainscot and floor are just fabulous! I love the idea of lavender on the walls. If you decide to paint, I would do that before making a decision about the window treatment. A cafe curtain would be a nice vintage touch.

I like the black and white check for the window but the towel ring seems too large for the space. How about a small free standing towel rack?

I'd go with wallpaper! A vintage-looking pattern to go with the floor. And a small towel bar under the window.

I'm going to have to get a floor-standing TP holder because there isn't even enough space on the left of the toilet for a wall-mounted! It's that tiny in there, I stopped the crew from installing the TP holder the wall in front of the toilet because it would be in the way of walking into the room! I'm thinking that a floor TP holder and a floor towel holder would crowd up the room.

To the left of the mirror, there's a wall outlet that prohibits hanging anything close enough to the sink to reach. Anything hanging will have to go under the window.

I love wallpaper and had bookmarked a few selections. But, wallpaper is very tricky due to the unevenness of the old plaster walls. The reason I know is that we stripped off the yellowed wallpaper that had been applied sometime in the past! There was a border strip at the top and it was noticeably uneven.

It's old. It's tiny. It's another challenge! I've not paid much attention to it until now because the toilet was covered over while I used the sink in lieu of no kitchen sink available.

I've looked at all the photos in this thread and honestly, except for the cramped look of the towel ring in your photo, I don't think there's anything here that's better than what you have.

Hold off on the standing TP holder. Just one more thing that takes up a lot of space.

Two options: cut a hole in the wall and put a recessed tp holder in there (that is what is in my tiny vintage powder room, and it's great).

Or, Lehman's sells a really great wall TP holder which doesn't take up a lot of space on the wall.

mimipadv- that's a great combo idea! It's the right size to be under one side of the sink. It's not available at any of my local stores, but if I order it and don't like it, then I can return it locally. Thanks!

I've read no replies but would paint the beadboard paneling a soft gray.

It's all great except for the towel ring! (And the roller shade, but you've addressed that!) Very pretty room. I bet my windowless powder room is even smaller than yours ;) If I were you, I'd ditch the towel ring and put a very simple hook centered under the window, and use fingertip towels instead of full-size hand towels. We have little hooks for towels in all of our bathrooms. I wouldn't get too decorative with it, just a simple hook that doesn't come out too far from the wall.

I am also a fan of window film. There are lots of options online, from basic etched glass to more decorative patterns. In your case, I'd go simple.

I like the room minus towel ring. Glad you had it removed. DD2 put a frosted window film from Lowes on her bathroom window then I made a simple sheer gathered on tension rods. Here entire window is covered but you could easily do half, leaving top open.

I like your room with the exception of the towel ring. Would you consider using just a hook. Many towels have hanging loops on them and I think a cute hook (Anthropologie has a lot of neat ones) would look so much better.

ETA: I love this one and your grandchildren would too!

I've had a couple of tight bathrooms, where a holder was a problem so I just put a basket with TP beside the toilet.
