Depending on the type of azalea, it is possible but not terribly likely that roots will be produced in water. Even if it should, however,the transition from water to solid planting mix will almost certainly fail. There are lots of instructions on this site and elsewhere online for how to root azaleas. Some are very easy to root and some are difficult. All require a porous rooting medium that drains well but holds moisteure, not plain water.
