Just like to add that, this plant remains outdoor into late fall or early winter, until about 40F. So the chilling requirement should be met.

Short stalks is a recurring problem with all my oranges (12 of which are clones from the same plant). So the genetic thing could be the problem. My 2 yellows don't have short stalks. I'm told that short stalks are a result of not holding back on the water for a couple of "resting" months (late winter for me). So, this year I'm watering sparingly 2x/month instead of once a week. @elvis: twice a month is still very frequent. I only water mine once a month in winter.

I have a clivia - orange - that I purchased at the Boston Flower Show about 35 years ago. It continues to bloom but the stalk is indeed too short. I give it the winter resting period and I only water about once a month the rest of the year. As I recall, it is a light feeder so feed accordingly. I do so in the spring a bit, a little in the summer and not at all in the fall or winter. Wish I could get a taller stalk. Thanks. years, they say 12 or more leaves. left ALL mine out too long last fall and lost them all. did not like sub 40.
