Does this antique work - Master bath decor

last modified: 10 years ago

Please don't tire of my posts! Y'all are the best for ideas and feedback.

At last, I have the final inspection for the addition and can begin putting things in the master suite.

The much-discussed temporary curtains are up -- French toile cafe on tension rods while I decide if there's a better option. My carpenter worked so hard on installing picture molding to give this bath a 1930's Parisian feel. He also did all of the tile work. The herringbone tile floor is heated, too.

The tub is a refinished 1933 pedestal.

This was my mother's tea cart and wash bowl/pitcher. I snipped some camellia and magnolia branches to see how the pitcher will work for flowers. I put the wash bowl on the bottom shelf to make it easy to grab bath linens from the cart.

View going into the bath:

I'll add lotions and soaps as I go.

The top is a removable glass tray. All original.

Does the cart work?

Should I leave it in the natural mahogany or paint it?

The tub is 15 inches away from the window, so I can walk behind it to clean, open and close future window treatments, etc.

I had saved off this inspiration photo of picture molding and window treatments. I can go with any color in this bath as all the permanent materials are quiet -- soft grey and warm white.

I've wondered if plantation shutters 3/4 up for privacy, but leaving the top open for light, would look too "hard" all alone since there are so many hard materials in a bath. I'll wait until my furniture is in and decide.

I have a great view of my backyard, but unfortunately, as you can see in the uncovered window version of my bath above, that's my neighbor's chicken coop, so I need privacy from when they're out there (which is often). They have two teenage boys with a trampoline over there, too!

These panels are fixed to the side, so there's no rod across to interfere with the picture molding. I love the "fun" aspect of these drapes! The walls look to be an ice blue, but my bath is exposed to the north. I went with a custom mix of an old SW paint that I used in my previous home in 2005. My walls are SW Glass of Milk.

Beautiful bathroom. I have a tea cart just like yours, only a heavy Chinese screen fell right on top of it years ago and ruined the wheel axle. I use it as a side table in the library, draped with a brocade cloth. :(

Muy Bueno!!!!!!wished you had the kind of privacy that would allow no curtains

ETA: the 1/2 shutters would work for me to block peeping tom chicks

I must say that Enrique, the foreman on my entire project, was meticulous with carpentry and tile -- he measured and drew out every line for the molding, one wall at a time. He'd then pull me in to look at it and we'd adjust. We had to figure out placement of everything on each wall and he provided "breaks" for towel bars, the cabinet above the toilet, light switches, etc. There were times that he wasn't satisfied with how a section looked, so he'd take it down and redo the wall to make a section fit!

    Sources:

Pottery Barn, large beveled mirror. I bought on sale many months ago, but they still carry it. I love this mirror.

Pottery Barn Matilda Wall Cabinet above toilet.

Toto Eco Guinevere Toilet (notice the skirt). I bought mine from Wayfair for $600+ instead of this list price. Free shipping. This is the first time since 1990 that I didn't build a separate water closet. This is for aging in place, open to the bath. I've got to get used to looking at a toilet in the bath!

RH Wilshire Single Sconce in polished nickel.

RH Chatham Train Rack in polished nickel. Small towel bar and double TP holder are also Chatham.

RH Odeon Extra-wide Single Vanity Sink in white and carrara marble.

RH Anselme Medium Pendant (2) in weathered white. The beads are wood so that I didn't add more hard materials.

The sink and shower faucets are Delta Cassidy in polished nickel (too many links to find, I'm lazy). There is a rain head shower, then a handheld. The handheld isn't Cassidy, but it's also Delta.

The refinished tub, with the faucet, came from Ready to Re on Etsy.

Seta Porcelain floor tile, 6x24, in Silver from BestTile.

Bianco Carrara Marble subway tile in shower from BestTile.

The shower floor tile is porcelain, but there's no link available.

The glass shower enclosure was locally sourced to fit. It was the most expensive single item in the bath!

    Oh, it's just gorgeous.

For privacy, could you look into frosted or stained glass, or a film? (I don't know how real these films look.)

    DYH thanked nosoccermom

I have window grilles (divided lite), so film is tricky for all those rectangles. Thanks.

The 3rd picture I posted also have window grilles, so you may have to cut :)

I didn't read all the posts. Love your floor and love the tub in front of the window. Do you need privacy? If not I'd leave the windows bare or tied back. I have a similar set up and I rarely close the WT; i like looking out the window in the tub. Probably too late now but you could have faced the tub away from the toilet and shower?

I think the tea cart is sweet but is it the only thing dark in the room? i find it a bit strong in the sea of monochrome. I might try to put a marble top on it, and a weathered light color basket on the lower level, heaped with white towels. And also try to repeat the dark color somewhere elses in the room. Id think maybe two framed items on either side of the door, but hate to compete with all the molding...

    In the above posts...

.yes, I have additional mahogany furniture.

    Yes, I need privacy.

    Tub direction:

The way the tub is facing...when I'm in it, I will be facing the vanity, not the toilet, I will have my head resting on the end where the cart is located, not on the faucet end.

The toile cafe tiers weren't too expensive to replace, that's why I went with those to gain privacy while I get everything else situated first. All the other cafe tiers in retail looked too kitchen-y or too sheer to help.

If I want to go with long toile panels and planation shutters, is the print still a classic, or outdated?

I'd like to stay with the darker blue with white theme because I have blue&white porcelain tissue cover, trays, lotion dispenser, trash can -- on order. I have solid navy and solid white towels.

Here are some panels that I like:

The same toile in long panels from Country Curtains.

Artisan Paisley blue with a creamier, rather than white, background.

Medallion panels add aqua to the navy/grey - from PB. Too modern and too grey?

Shadow Floral (must order soon as final sale) from West Elm.

I have so many fabrics on pinterest, too. For custom drapes.

This bath from Architectural Digest is another that gave me the idea to make my bath a room to be lived in.

My chair is an antique version of that one, without the tufting. Mine has long lost it's casters, but I can add those again.

What do you think of art on the walls?

Notice that the curtains are just fabric panels tacked up in a casual way. Very warm.

Oh my, what a lovely bathroom. I have to tell you as soon as I saw your tea cart there I smiled ear to ear. I think it is perfect!

I'm late to this party, but I do want to add my big congratulations on a reno very well-done. This will truly be a magazine cover worthy room when you finish with the smaller details. You're right, the picture molding makes the room, along with the tub. I'm not crazy about the curtains, but love the tea cart. I do agree that art will add much to the room. I'm sure that with such a reno, you do have great ventilation, which will eliminate the possibility of steam ruining something. I'm anxious to see pics of the finished room, once all your accents are added. This is really the loveliest Ahhhhhhh bathroom!

I'm late too but adding how wonderful it all looks! The cart is spot on...

A few comments caught my eye. If you want to add more dark wood to complement the cart, perhaps a few framed photos hung from the trim with picture rails. Similar to your latest pic of the AD bathroom.

Just. Beautiful. Wow!. I normally really like frosted/wavy/stained glass real or faux, but the possibility of a naked silhouette in the window at night would preclude that option for me. I also love the toile and Country Curtains offers custom hemming including on that one, very reasonably. Still, for me, I would consider a neutral solid for curtain panels which to me would offer a more Spa-like feel and save the toile for the chair. However, your heart may sing with the toile WT, go with what you love; you've done an outstanding job so far!!!

I keep picturing a needlepoint rug, vintage or vintage-looking, with a black background in front of your tub. Something like this one that I've just found on Ebay for $295. Although our own master bath has no French leanings, but Spanish instead, I've had 2 needlepoint rugs in there for years. Love the vintage look they add. I also love the feel of them on my bare feet.

I LOVE it. I love your inspiration photos too. I love the window treatments in the first photo with half shutters. Leaving the upper portions of the windows open will enable you to look out at the trees, sky, moon while you are relaxing. You have done a beautiful job - can't wait to see as you finish. Will never tire of your posts Dyh :-)

My son and his friend helped me move things out of storage.

Here's the mahogany lingerie chest in the bath. I put a cobalt pitcher up there just to have something. I think a large blue & white ginger jar will be the thing.

I think the Victorian chair would be too much to add. The lingerie chest is more useful to me for storage and it doesn't crowd the tub or my vanity.

It feels very much like a room to live in. I like having furniture. I don't have a steam shower. There's a rain head and a handheld in the shower. There's good exhaust fan for the shower, too.

Perhaps I could add a ceramic garden stool at the faucet end of the tub? Either blue and white or navy?

I love everything in it (curtain too). Everything is so beautiful - you have great taste.

My only worry would be how the mahogany stands up in a bathroom (moisture, steam, etc.)

    DYH thanked decordummy_gw

I have a good ventilation fan for the shower and it isn't a steam shower. There's also so much square footage for air circulation. The bathroom is 8.5' x 20'.

I'd rather risk using these pieces in the bathroom than give them away because I have no other place where they'll work!

Would a small upholstered bench parallel to tub be too much? I keep thinking something soft would be nice.

    last modified: 10 years ago

I think it needs to be a stool, rather than a bench. I'm looking at upholstered options on Ballard Designs where I can choose Sunbrella fabrics.

RH has a true "bath stool" in polished nickel with a white terry seat. Maybe too utilitarian!

    LOL - me too! tufted

Any thoughts on what your window fabric will be? That may help with other choices.

Will you have a tray across the tub for a book or cup of tea?

I love the furry things for winter. I'd want to use something different in summer.

I have a tufted ottoman, round 36" on casters, but it is too big. I need something around 18-20" in width/diameter. I'd like it to be tall enough to sit on. A footstool is too low.

Anyway...I'm off to work on the china cabinet now that it's in the dining room. I'm unboxing all of my white and blue ironstone and porcelain items.

Dyh - I would worry about casters in the bath :-/. Hope we get to see your next project.

    DYH thanked sunfeather

The ottoman on casters is in my master closet. I used it in my previous master closet. I must sit while putting on socks and shoes!

Love the lingerie chest! That's a perfect spot for it.

Don't care for the garden stool. I think it's one too many heavy elements in the space. The next item you introduce should be lighter in appearance IMO. Otherwise, there are too many competing elements in the room.

Here are my antique slipper chairs (in storage upstairs):

And, I have this Eastlake Beehive bench with Napoleon bee upholstery:

I don't think any of these, even with reupholstery into better colors, will work in the bath.

I'm unpacking boxes and finding Spode blue & white vases; blue pottery, etc. I need to take an inventory of what I have, and have forgotten about, in this very long move. Things have been boxed up since May and June of last year.
