I don't think it looks unfinished but it might look better if it was wood instead of stainless.

I agree that it looks odd as is, but it's fixable. It reminds me of how fireplace units are cut off on the outside of houses now in Colorado. You could do the stainless all the way to the ceiling, and do a decorative stainless rivet/trim where it attaches. No harm/no foul if you don't love it. Try building a fake one of aluminum foil or something from HD to see if you like the look. While more expensive, you could also do a copper extension. Copper goes with your cabinetry and sheets of it are not outrageous. How you'd connect visually is key so that it doesn't look like an add on. You could also have a good faux finish done over it in a warmer metallic, but be very careful who you hire so that it's not DIY, and that it meets code. Also make sure to get samples first. Or, save your money and enjoy what you've done to date. When the time comes, an integrated wood unit might look the best, and you should be easily able to either go over this unit or sell this one.

You may want to photoshop your picture to make sure you are going to like it. Sometimes the tall extensions look more out of place than what you have. I have also seen sheetrock boxes built above and painted to match the wall, but they still show up as well.

How do you like the black countertops with the white island? I am thinking about doing the same combination. Do the black countertops make the room dark? Thanks!

Passionate Home, thanks for your comment. I apologize for just responding now so late. You have some great advice. I had made a template from cardboard but did not think of using aluminum foil. That would have been even better. The copper sheets are a new idea to me too. I like that one. I was working on this last year and ultimately I did what you also advised in a sense and I had a cap made from a local fabricator and decided to wait and see how I like it. I think it looks fine and it gives me the option to extend it up in the future. I was so overwhelmed last year when we were doing this as we had numerous outstanding issues with our Contractor and he flat out refused to do anything with the vent hood, even though the manufacturer said it needed to be enclosed. Whatever I did, I was going to have to install myself and the removable cap was the easiest option, and it looks fine. Thanks again. I can post a picture if you'd like.

Brickwood Builders, thank you for your comment, I did end up making a cap for the vent chimney after playing with a template for an extension. I had worried about the extension looking out of place but I kind of liked it both ways. Ultimately, the cap has been a good decision, and I can remove it if I change my mind later. Thanks.

I love my soapstone counters and marble island. We have a lot of natural light so it has never felt dark. We have a wall of windows to the right of that picture and 3 skylights. So, I can't say how it would be in an enclosed kitchen, but the marble I think keeps it light. My marble has a honed finish which I love. We do have more soapstone counters to the left with a peninsula too. Good luck with your project.
