The space is small so that rules out any type of table or cabinet.

As Beverly indicated, I would replace the rug, paint the angled wall, and hang something larger from what is currently on the wall.

Can you paint the angled wall a bright red - a hint of things to come when they reach your pretty living room? I can't tell what color that stair rug is...maybe it won't go so well together. If it does, then perhaps paint the door at the bottom of the stairs the red also and get a rug that ties the colors of the carpet stairs and red together.

Where did you get the peacock canvas from? I really like it!
