Hi, bought a Japanese maple sapling from a local garden centre about three years ago. On their advice, I dug in some mushroom compost before I planted. When the tree failed to thrive they said that the mushroom compost advice was a mistake and to replant it. I did this and it still looks terrible. It's in a voter of the garden that is shaded but with an hour od direct sunlight. The soil turns to clay about 40 cms down so I recognise that these aren't ideal conditions. It always looks dead by the end of winter (i know it's deciduous, but this really looks like a dried up twig) but in spring it comes back with delicate foliage that almost immediately starts to curl and shrivel up. There's web all over the leaves as well but I clear that. I've attached a photo. Any advice on how to save it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks, David (Newtown, NSW)
