Week 91: What's for breakfast?

I must start out by saying this is another brilliant thread theme from Mushcreek. Watch out or I'll pass the mantle on to you for the weekly threads!! ;)

For me, breakfast has always meant a bowl of cereal with some milk.

On the weekends, if I'm lucky, hubs decides to cook and we get pancakes, bacon, eggs, sauage, hashbrowns, etc. The full spread.

I planned my kitchen accordingly, there is literally an entire shelf of my pantry devoted to cereal.

I always make sure that the pantry/fridge/freezer are stocked for those times my hubby decides to cook breakfast though.

Recently I've enjoyed watching videos on YouTube that show kids experiencing a typical meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc) from another part of the world.

It got me thinking... (Yes, I know its a dangerous past time)

We are all so accustomed to our own particular set of "normal" that we sometimes forget that our "normal" is completely foreign to others.

Let's break that for a moment shall we?

What is YOUR "normal" breakfast?

I'm from Turkey. For most, a normal breakfast here is bread, cheese and olives.

Simit is very popular. One can get it on the way to work or on weekends.

On weekends eggs (soft/hard boiled, scrambled, with sucuk or cheese), butter, olive oil, honey, jams, pogaca can be added to the menu.

Many years ago, it was toast and hashbrowns, then it became just toast. Always with tea. Real tea, orange pekoe, not flavoured tea like Earl Gray or English Breakfast (side note: I always bring my own teabags to the USA because it seems no one drinks orange pekoe there; at least at soccer tournaments in OH, MI and IN). Then as I progressed in age, I wanted to be more healthy, so I made home-made Qia cereal (chia seeds, hemp hearts, buckwheat groats, dried fruit, cinnamon) and would have that mixed with quick oats and berries. With tea. Right now I'm doing a "green smoothie" challenge for breakfast, which is hard, because they are cold and I like a "hot" breakfast. So, to solve that somewhat, I make it the night before put it in a mason jar and after my shower before I do anything else, I take it out of the fridge so it's not as ice cold. My kids usually have cereal, toast or bacon. Sometimes store bought waffles, but we haven't had those in a while. If we haven't figured anything out for dinner, we'll have breakfast for dinner once in a while.

My daily breakfast in hot weather is cereal; in cold weather, steel cut oatmeal. I love trying different additives to my oatmeal; peanut butter, maple syrup, etc. The most decadent version is Nutella and coconut. Too many calories, though. Most days I just add a dollop of peanut butter. I like Trader Joe's steel cut oatmeal, and finally worked out a microwave method that works.

On Sunday mornings, we usually have poached eggs, smothered in cheese. I make homemade sausage from time to time. I recently made jalapeno cheddar sausage, which I then smoked. Yum!

This morning I woke up early, had a cup of coffee and a granola bar. Last evening I had a bowl of oatmeal with raisins for supper. :)

When the kids are all home I like to make a breakfast casserole, or biscuits and sausage gravy. Pancakes are also a favorite family feast.

Green smoothie with fruit, protein powder, seeds and lots of kale.

I can't eat breakfast before 10-10:30. I usually skip and just do lunch instead which consists of either veggies with hummus or breakfast foods (eggs or plain oat meal with fruit, or pancakes, cereal, etc) My stomach can't tolerate greasy or filling foods that early in the morning...

Cereal with berries and milk. We still had two teenagers at home when we remodeled our kitchen, and dedicated a cabinet to cereal - it pays to stock up when our favorites go on sale!

Plain Greek yogurt with fresh stone fruit and/or berries in the summer, maybe with a sprinkle of toasted almonds. Same yogurt and frozen berry smoothie in winter. And tea. Must. Have. Tea. Loose leaf. Black or oolong. If I'm traveling in the US, I carry my own teabags like mgmum because what's typically available is worthless. It's a national disgrace. Harumph.

Usually cold cereal with skim milk and fruit. I prefer fresh berries but when they are too expensive I use raisins.

On Saturdays I have two fried eggs and toast. Sundays sometimes I have grits with scrambled Egg Beaters with a slice of low fat cheese.

MGmum, try putting some of your warm tea in your smoothie -- that is what I do, use my tea for the liquid instead of juice. (I drink Red Rose brand, having grown up on Lipton I know not better. Interested in what brands you like.)

So, yes, I sometimes do a smoothie with greens, apple, avocado, yogurt and protein powder. Lately I have been having Morningstar or Boca veggies patties, love them, but I think that the soy in them is worsening my hot flashes so I am going to switch to turkeyburgers. Trying to get considerable protein in my AM meals.

Sometimes I make biscuits out of oatmeal and fresh raw apple, or have oatmeal or cream of wheat with fruit and an egg. Even in summer I like something warm, I don't care much for cold cereals but do eat them in hot weather.

What I really love but am cutting back on are fresh biscuits made with buttermilk and eaten with my homemade preserves.

All of that is for my days off -- work mornings I don't drag myself out of bed early enough, and have to wait a while after taking my medication before eating, so breakfast on those days has to be portable and quick (as I can grab only a few minutes break in the first hour) such as fruit, fresh or dried, or one of those bars, or instant oatmeal, or the veggie burger.

Typical breakfast (if, by that, you mean what gets stuffed into my face in the morning): coffee, lots of it...and keep it coming! :D My first meal is around noontime: cereal and milk.

My breakfast routine varies. Weekdays it's either microwave eggs and spinach, oatmeal or steel cut oats cooked with berries (it's like cobbler for breakfast!). Weekends I'll prepare migas, homemade pancakes or waffles. I, too, have oatmeal for dinner at times. :)

Interesting about the tea selections. Lipton is an Orange Pekoe tea. Not saying Lipton is a premier brand or anything, but we do drink it here. With ice. :)

Plain yogurt with real maple syrup and chocolate chips to sweeten it. And I too am not a morning person so wind up eating my breakfast around 10:30 or 11 AM. Every once in a while I'll have 1/2 a bagel with cream cheese and lox.

Frankly one of my favorite things about my bike tour in the Netherlands was the standard breakfast at the hotels: oatmeal/cereal, bread, egg, cheese, ham, butter, juice, peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles. I really only needed a small lunch after that!

I'm not a tea expert, but I think Orange Pekoe is a grading term. It's not a variety of tea. Standard issue grocery store tea bags in the US usually have little bits of broken leaves in them, sometimes including what are called 'fannings' or even 'dust.' There are many higher quality tea bags available. Brewed properly (as in the water is hot enough), I can drink these, but even the step up to Twinings and similar brands makes a big difference.

During our remodel we've resorted to tea bags most of the time because my sister doesn't like tea paraphernalia in her kitchen. I currently like Rishi brand tea bags a lot. Their English Breakfast blend is good (all tea, no added flavors). It's not whole leaf, but you can see more and bigger twists of leaf than in most tea bags. Best of all, it's fragrant and yummy. And not smokey. Hate smokey tea. Some breakfast blends are smokey. Bah. Patooey.

I drink my coffee in the mornings. Sometimes I flavor it with actual food.. lol

With the kitchen I have atm in the apartment, I find myself tired at the very thought of cooking, which is not normal for me.

When I DO feel like cooking, it is "look in the fridge and cook anything you find.. eggs, sausage, tomatoes (sliced), potatoes (fried), toast with grape jelly.. looove my grape jelly.. lol.. and a side of COFFEE! ;)

Raee_gw, I typically use Tetley because I can buy it in jumbo packages at Costco. Red Rose is better than Lipton IMO. Remember Red Rose used to put those teeny little ceramic animals or nursery rhyme characters in the box? We had quite a collection along the mantle. My friend has an old timey styled house and she actually has a special wall display shelf for them! I was so excited to see it! I had to take a photo to send to my Mom and sister. LOL

I can't believe so many people wait so long to eat! I'm hungry when I wake up and VERY cranky if I don't get breakfast. I can almost do without the tea if I have food but if I have neither, I would not want to be around me if I was anyone else! LOL

PS. I had to google Migas; it sounds reallly good!!

Weekdays: small banana and blueberries. Easy to eat at my desk. Lately I have been making these 'energy bites' as a side kick that I find to be like dessert. I walk very early in the morning so I am HUNGRY by 7.

    http://www.gimmesomeoven.com/no-bake-energy-bites/

Weekends I get really wild and crazy: grapenuts with the banana sliced and blueberries on top.

Local restaurant has a 'scram' that has eggs, ham, mushrooms, fresh potato cube hashbrowns and cheese served with cinnamon toast and that is quite a treat!

I live in the US, and I'm with Monika. My stomach doesn't really wake up until after 11am. Just more proof that no part of me is a morning person.

I usually drink a ton of water throughout the morning because I get so dehydrated when I sleep, but that is it. My first meal usually happens 11am-3pm, so I'm just having lunch by then. Today, I had pad kee mow and half a pure heart watermelon.

My husband is from Russia, and he used to have green tea and toast topped with either peanut butter or cream cheese every morning. He probably would have done that for the rest of his life, but then he married me, and I have an incurable toast problem and cannot be trusted to own a toaster.

So now he has yogurt or oatmeal with blueberries. And probably silent debates about the respective merits of wives vs. toast.

Weekdays, yogurt at 7:15 on the way out the door. Weekends, DH likes to go to Dunkin Donuts and often brings me a blueberry muffin. No more than 2 cups of coffee each day, always before noon. I'd be up all night otherwise.

I can't eat in the morning I can't really eat lunchtime either so I usually stop at Starbucks for a vente latte on way to work and then again at noon and then have a salad with fresh salmon at 5 or 6 yea my eating habits are really bad. For the kids it's a yogurt with a straw on the way to school we don't eat cereal here and we are nut and egg free also so breakfast is hard

I'm not a morning person either. I can't even stomach the thought of food first thing in the morning. Ugh. It's straight coffee for me until mid-morning. Then I usually have a green smoothie with various greens, frozen berries, half a frozen banana, whatever other fruit I have around that sounds good that morning, chia and flax seeds, hemp or pea protein powder, a dollop of orange-flavored glucosamine-chondroitin, a handful or two of either steel-cut oats, bulgur or farina, and then a bit of ice and water. I sometimes sprinkle in some cinnamon or other spice or extract. This is super-filling and keeps me going through lunch. I usually have a light afternoon snack and don't really eat much solid food until dinner.

These are quick to make because I make smoothie packs for the freezer. Everything goes in a ziplock bag except the water/ice. I just dump all the ziplock contents in the blender, add the water/ice, and blend. It makes about 80 oz. all together so DH and I share it and there's usually a bit left over for later.

DH usually has his smoothie plus some steel-cut oats or bulgur. Usually with berries and some almond milk. I've been doing this for awhile but DH is actually new to them. He couldn't get past the color but finally gave them a try and realized they taste great.

Once in awhile, we might also have pancakes or some other treat breakfast on the weekend.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't eat breakfast.

The breakfast is for my family, I can't stand to have anything except water when I first wake up. About an hour or so later, its a cup of coffee and nothing else but water until mid afternoon when I actually feel hungry.

I've eaten this way for as long as I can remember, except during pregnancies when I was ravenous all the time!

The remains of my son's toast and banana as he dashes out the door for the 6:59 school bus. So excited that next year school starts half an hour later; maybe the kid will have time to eat. Nah, he'll just sleep longer. Anyway, I like a little bowl of cottage cheese for breakfast, maybe even on a toasted whole grain English muffin, yum.

I'm different I guess, in that I am a morning person. I struggle to stay in bed until 5 AM. I usually eat before 6.

I forgot to add that my morning oatmeal has a spoonful of strong cinnamon. I love cinnamon, and it's good for blood sugar and cholesterol.

We don't have a "normal" bfast. Usually coffee I guess. But in the winter we do occasionally like oatmeal and fried apples; however, this weekend we made yogurt and granola. So that is bfast this week

All you "can't stomach food until noon" folks, how do you tolerate coffee on an empty stomach? THAT would make me nauseated for sure! Amazing how different folks are. And if I didn't eat until noon I would be sooo hungry I would be vacuuming up anything I could fit in my mouth...

I am usually a coffee, a diet coke, an apple or orange and then dinner around 7pm kinda gal. My husband likes lunch of some sort that includes a protein - pbj or left overs from the previous night's dinner.

I'm another who can't eat for a while after I wake up. I'm currently nursing a mug of Vanilla Honey Chamomile tea and I've been up for hours getting kids off to school and running errands. When things settle down I usually eat some toast with butter and that's about it for breakfast for me. We have some croissants left over from a party this weekend so I will probably eat one with my tea.

DH likes to make protein smoothies for himself, or sometimes he will eat bread and cheese with jam. He lived in Holland and Belgium for a couple of years and picked up that habit.

The kids generally eat cereal, toaster waffles, toast, or oatmeal for breakfast on weekdays. On weekends I make pancakes or french toast.

Well, since I've given up my decades of Reese's cups & Espresso, I'm kinda at a loss. I have to eat something or the vitamins the Dr makes me take will make me yak. Ick.

Recently it's yogurt mixed with honey, some almost milk and wheat germ. I like to drink it. Today I used cherry jam instead of honey. Nothing special. But I like it. Delicious.

The cats get enough milk to cover the bottom of their bowls. Bentley immediately throw up his milk and breakfast and goes back for more. Hmm. Seems to be a throw up theme here.

Kali gets 4 kibbles of some cat treat, since she doesn't like milk.

    There. Breakfast at Christine's.

I like toast. I really like toast. I seldom eat it for breakfast though. I think it's the perfect snack with real butter melted on it to the point there is almost a small puddle. Honey on it sometimes or cinnamon sugar - it's a snack, it's dessert, it feels good on a cold winter day! There are so many reasons to love it. The problem for me is if I eat it I can't stop eating it and I love the soft white bread. Every time I eat it I hear that saying "the whiter the bread the quicker you're dead". It sticks to my hips my thighs - oh my. Yeah, I try to just say no to toast. ;)

I love toast, too, but I only eat toast if it's my homemade bread. It is so much better, and I figure if I burned the calories hand kneading it, I deserve to eat it! I only make bread a few times a year, so that keeps me out of trouble (somewhat).

I love toast, too. DH and I just got a Breville Smart toaster oven and it elevates toast to a new level. Our favorites are toasted sourdough (from the farmers market) and sometimes we butter and melt cheese on top to make "cheesy bread".

    That's a real treat.

Just ate an omelette (1 chick egg, 1 duck egg) with arugula, smoked edam and blue cheese. Now for the coffee.

Workdays I usually have: a couple soft boiled or poached eggs, and some fruit. Or leftovers I can nuke. (I'm still not working due to my accident.) Weekends I'll do the omelette thing or scrambled eggs. I seldom eat bread. I am bringing more veggies into every meal (colorful veggies for health). Occasionally I'll do a veggie-focused smoothie -- very little fruit in that. I do have some blood oranges and may use one of those for breakfast tomorrow. (They're so pretty...) Sometimes plain yogurt (I'll top it with my own choice of stuff -- since the commercial blends are laden with sugars), and on real cold mornings, rolled (NOT instant) oatmeal is nice. But I like to top this with a little milk, but since I seldom use milk for anything else -- it's usually not here.

One thing I don't ever do: have what I consider "dessert" for breakfast. You know, pastries, donuts. Never.

I need breakfast. Could skip lunch and even dinner but breakfast sets me up for the day.

Monday through Friday: A serving of hot whole grain cereal (Bob's Red Mill 7-Grain is my fav) In winter I add a chopped apple while it's cooking. In summer, it's seasonal berries instead. I top w/ a tiny drizzle of real maple syrup, some steamed skim milk and a smattering of toasted walnuts. On the side I have a small fruit cup of chopped citrus w/ a dollop of yogurt. One cup of coffee with frothed skim milk.

My DH loves a hearty breakfast - I don't like heavy or meaty food in the morning. On Saturdays he gets his fix at a breakfast place near our home which has a "Cheers-like" atmosphere. He always gets poached eggs on their homemade hash smothered in hollandaise with buttered rye toast on the side. I enjoy socializing with the workers & regulars, but I can't start the day with a meal like that!

Sunday morning - every Sunday morning - it's crepes made by DH. I make crispy bacon to serve on the side and prepare seasonal fruit to put on top or have in a fruit cup with yogurt. The crepes are drizzled and rolled with real maple syrup. I serve marmalade or jams for those who like that as a topping. In summer when I pick berries I make fresh blueberry or raspberry syrups. Lattes for adults & the kids get chocolate milk on Sunday mornings;)

The Sunday morning crepe breakfast/brunch is a "thing" with our family. We've done it since our kids were little and now our grandkids look forward to it, too.

    My weekday staples -

Who are you people who don't like breakfast??? I like breakfast. I like veggie soup for breakfast or turkey sausage and a big serving of whatever veggie is in the produce drawer. This morning I had a pumpkin muffin because I don't have anything else in the house at the moment. It's sitting there like a lump of lead. Wish I had some soup. Should have made a protein shake. :(

I love breakfast food, Suzanne, I just can't eat it at breakfast. It's not unusual for us to have breakfast for dinner. Or for me to have breakfast for lunch.

I have to be up at least an hour, sometimes two hours, before I even want my morning green smoothie. And then it's several hours after that before food sounds appealing at all. If we're leaving early for hiking or a long bike ride where I need to fuel my body well before starting out, I do choke down a hearty breakfast but, really, I am forcing myself. And it may be hearty items but still small. It's rare I actually eat enough in those situations so I need to pack some extra weight in healthy snacks to eat along the way so I don't bonk.

I've tried the old axiom of feast at breakfast like a king, lunch like a peasant, and dinner like a pauper. The concept makes sense to me but I just can't do it. My favorite time to have a big meal is actually lunch. So I guess I tend to do it pauper-king-peasant?

I guess we're all wired a bit differently.

We love breakfast for dinner too!

I love breakfast for dinner! We had breakfast taco's on Tuesday - a different kind of taco Tuesday, lol!

Another who cannot eat first thing. I just drink coffee for at least an hour. If have to work or going somewhere, I might force myself to have oatmeal with berries, plain yogurt with bobs red mill muesli and fruit, cottage cheese with fruit, or a make a green smoothie to go. If I am home I'll usually have the above or wait until I'm actually hungry. Then I like to make an omelet with tons of veggies and salsa. If dh and I are working we like to go out for a late breakfast. I love the Japanese breakfast at two of our favorite breakfast places. It is miso soup, rice, eggs, fresh fish, and pickled veggies. I always ask for a side of their aioli sauce for the fish. At first, fish for breakfast sounded so gross to me, but now I love it.
