Maybe a mirror , or a colorful piece of art ? Maybe flowers?

Get a replacement shelf and paint white semi-gloss with more substantial wooden korbel-like brackets to hold it up.

Get a large, well-framed mirror to hang above it and a lacquered tray appropriately proportioned to fit on the shelf.

This could be an attractive spot to check your appearance before heading out the door. The shelf will be a 'drop-off' spot for keys, cell phones etc., thus the need for a nice tray to compartmentalize these everyday necessities. And, an ever changing glass vase (look at Pottery Barn) that is wall mounted would add a nice touch with just a few stems of flowers,never greens, sea shells etc., etc.

Oh, and ditch the dated phone. Get a portable phone for a counter in the kitchen.

Lots of things you can do, but first get a substantial shelf that adds some presence to your entry.
