I recommend you feed them 1-2 cups of food in a section and then feed again in a different section in one week. Check the last feeding spot to see how they've processed it. If the food is consistently all gone or mostly gone then increase the amount. Don't overfeed, but you may see that you need to increase the food amounts pretty soon. I have 10-gallon totes with between 1,500-2,000 worms and I'm feeding just over 1/2 gallon of food weekly in 1/4 sections at a time. This way in the course of a month all sections of my bins get food. Note: my bins are well established.

In my bin I find that the worms start feeding from underneath first , but once I can see a lot of worms on top feeding on said food,, it is at that time I add the same amount of food in another corner. The reason being it will take maybe 48 hrs for that food to start decomposing- Im saying this assuming you have the food chopped into the smallest particles you can using a food chopper or juicer will help.. Once you have been doing this for a while you realize this is the only way to go , otherwise the food just lays there for a long time and your bin may become anerobic.

This morning when I took the lid off my 360 I was greeted by an unusual site. A certain amount of worms were on top of this moist newsprint covering. Normally they will stay underneath this covering so I was surprised at first , but then I remembered I had sprinkled some of my oatmeal/cornmeal mash on top of the paper and the worms obviously there to get it. It also appears there is worm castings in the mix.

I feed my worms old bananas, peeled, and melon rinds which they seem to really love. I didn't have any issue with flies until I left the lid ajar on my plastic bin here in Florida. Now I have all these grey flies that are actually quite large, bigger than kitchen type fruit flies. I started with 20 worms, and some damp peat moss and now have more than I can count.
