Old Drapes Versus New

On another thread several of you had commented that my toile drapes were too feminine, color not quite right or not appropriate for this room. I thought you might have a point and ordered new drapes from JCPenney on-line. It was not possible to tell how well the colors would match, and they're not exactly the color of the furniture, but I'm hoping they'll go with my new greige carpet that will be installed next week. Couldn't wait until then to hear your opinions, and so here are some before and after pictures. I hope you'll let me know what you think. Even though the drapes are lined and interlined they're still much thinner than the toile.

I like the new drapes a lot! They work well with your furniture and wall colors, and they're enough to soften the look of the windows.

As much as I love toile, (you should see it all over my house), I do think the new drapes work much better with your lovely, comfortable looking furnishings.

Thank you all so much! I'm so relieved that I did the right thing, and it was all due to you who pointed out that the toile really didn't look right. After some time you don't really notice everything around you, so it's always wonderful to have fresh eyes to analyze one's space.

I like the color of the new curtains but they look insubstantial when compared to the toile curtains.

    They look amazing!

I have to agree with KSWL. I think the color and style is fine but they are so thin that it detracts from the overall look. Do they carry the exact look and color in a more substantial fabric?

They look "okay", I think it's too much taupe given your wall color and furniture color. What about panels in the accent color, like that green pillow? Or, barring that, what about having a wide piece of flat trim in the green color sewn along the inside edge of each panel?

I like the new curtains very much and I think it's fine that they're not quite as heavy, perhaps, as the old curtains were. They look fresh and like you're ready for spring. I think they're keepers.

The curtains are lined and interlined but I took these pictures with the afternoon sun behind them. I'll try and take another one today. I realize the color is slightly different but hope it will blend in with the new greige carpeting I'll be getting. In retrospect sage green might have been a better choice, but this curtain is already sold out and I really like it because it has a somewhat crinkly texture that gives more interest. I wasn't quite brave enough to go with a different color in the first place. I'm already returning an ivory pair and these have been moistened and fluffed up in the dryer to get the wrinkles out and repacking them might be a challenge now. I'm finding it's much easier to give other people advice than to make the right choices for me.

You are certainly not alone in that regard, Ingrid!

Ingrid, it's always easier to give advise. Your drapes look fine, I just prefer a more substantial drape. WTBS, you should see the very dated window treatments in my own living room. Your drapes are at least stylish and a great color in your room. I can see that the bright sunlight is what is making them look so sheer.

i much prefer them over the toile panels!! the color looks nice with your furniture, walls and carpet/rug. and, if you decide you want to add some color/texture at some point, you can add some trim to the leading edge or elsewhere else!

I like the new ones, it draws my attention more to your pretty outside area, window style, and arch, by being more monotone. I liked the toile, too, but I think these new ones look more elegant in your room.

I like toile, but I like the calm sophistation of the grey drapes. You have a lot of display items, and I think a calmer background plays better with them.

Pictures taken today with different pillows on couch.

Just have to keep fussing, changed another pillow and the painting on the right. I have now officially lost interest. If the drapes are too taupe I care not.

Your accessories are lovely and I love your coffee table display. If you want your drapes to slide open and close easier, you could use clip-on rings.

We actually had clip-on rings but I like the shirred look better, and we really don't do much with these drapes. There's light coming in from other directions so it's not a big deal. I'm glad You like the accessories; they're mostly antique Chinese pieces.

I'd 'shir' the curtains so that there's a little more fabric in front of the window so it doesn't appear too sheer.

That was a good idea, Arlene, I've just done that and it does look better. Thanks for the tip.
