Husband is not happy with the sitting arrangement in our living room

last modified: 10 years ago

First, I apologize for the quality of the photos.

DH feels that we need more sitting. The sofa and chair were custom made (custom fabric was used as well). He wanted to order a second chair, identical to the one we have, and as it turned out, the manufacturer discontinued both the style and the fabric......

We have a library room right off the great room pictured here, plus we also have a dedicated media room for watching TV/movies with what he feels adequate sitting, but he feels that the LR is lacking, lacking something. I'm thinking that we will probably need to look for two accent chairs and to replace the chair that we have with those. I don't know how I feel about it. Also, I really do not want to put another sofa there instead of the current chair and block the fireplace view (from the dining/kitchen). Ideas/thoughts?

Well Hamma, I'm going to weigh in that having another identical chair would be way too "living room suite" -ish, and not at all worthy of this cool interesting space! So I don't think you should be disappointed that you can't get another! JMO

drdeb1234, agreed and thank you :). My husband initially was very keen on getting the second chair, and it's disappointing that we cannot get one, but I can see your point and I think it's for the best (at the end of the day) that we can't :).

So, I was able to locate the chair in one of the showrooms. It would be quite a drive for us, but my husband agreed to take a look. Stay tuned :)

I love your home! I think a walnut-topped Saarinen side table would work well between your sofa and armchair. It would be functional and also complement the other warm woods in your home.

Awesome. I love the womb chair. Is that the one you're going to see? I spoke too soon about getting another chair to match, the womb chair will look great. Good luck!

Lori East, ah, I love your idea! Thanks so much. I've been wondering whether I need a side table or not. Well, I'm thinking perhaps I could put a side table where I have the magazine holder now, and move the magazine holder next to my sculpture. Just because if I were to put it between the armchair and the sofa, it will close off the entrance to the sitting area somewhat. Well, anyway, I guess I need to try it out and see!

SandyC., the original womb chair is just way out of my budget, sadly. Going to see Jens Chair, this one:

The first comment by s Misty Interiors is spot on. To that I would add simple neutral (white/off white) drapery panels to add some softens and warmth to the room. Love your furniture.

So we checked out the Jens chair in person, and we were both quite disappointed. I was more so than DH, because I had high hopes for it. Whilst the chair is lovely and truly timeless in its design, I don't think it was made for tall(er) people. I'm a slim 5'10 gal and DH is taller than me. I was not quite comfortable in it. Or not comfortable at all, I should say. The chair has a much smaller footprint than I thought it would, looking at the pictures online. Long trip to find it out, but I guess it was worth it in the end, as it saved us from making a mistake.

Now, DH fell in love with Milo Baughman Recliner 74. I have to admit it felt extremely comfortable to me as well! But, I don't really care for recliners, and the taller backs might not work for us, if we were to put them facing the fireplace. For any other arrangement, it would, I guess. Also, I'm not really sure whether we'll get one or two of these chairs. Depends on the furniture arrangement, again. I feel like I'm kind if stuck and not sure what direction to take...

I think one of those would be perfect!

I would move around some of the furniture. If you are thinking of buying a new couch I would recommend a white sectional sofa.

Husband's concern is not enough seating. I agree. Adding one or two chairs barely increases the amount of seating. Move the bookcase to the library or media room. Purchase another long sofa and another comfortable chair in a style similar or complementary to the first set, but in a different, brighter, color. Choose that color from the painting on the wall. Then put sofa number 1 across from where it is now. Put sofa number 2 where sofa number 1 was. Put chair number 1 nearer sofa number 2 and chair number 2 closer to sofa number 1, both chairs flanking a nice table, and facing the fireplace at a slight angle. You will be able to look between the two chairs to see the fireplace from the dining room. Place a narrow "coffee table" in front of each sofa, and end tables in agreeable but different styles at each end of the sofas. The room is a bit stiff right now. It needs some more art, some additional lighting (floor and/or table lamps), some softness in a throw and larger pillows, and another accent color (from the painting). Maybe add a potted plant or two to add height to the accessories, and perhaps a couple or three pillows in contemporary patterns.

Yes, I definitely want to move the furniture around. That's why I posted here :)

groveraxle, thanks very much for the visual!

felizlady, there are parts of this great room that just didn't make it in the picture. I have a large art piece n the hallway leading to the library room, right off the sitting area, more art in the kitchen area, a big potted plant near the dining table, etc. I just didn't photograph it all. My main concern is that sitting area at the moment. The finishing touches might come later. I know I need to update the pillows, but I decided not to do it until I figure out the seating. I'm not moving the bookcase though. It has our stereo system and it holds some books. I need to have at least some books in that area.

Well, I have some development :)

Since DH and I cannot come to the same conclusion when it comes to chairs' comfort level, it seems, we decided to look at sofas today. And, DH and I both liked Oliver sofa from Room and Board. It's funky enough for us, yet quite comfortable, albeit somewhat firm. DH is letting me choose the fabric for it! We brought home some swatches, and I'm thinking of making a statement with my color selection, although I haven't decided for sure just yet.

We would put it to face the fireplace.

    Any comments/thoughts?

Add a beautiful antique daybed and place it in front of the fireplace where you now have the armchair. Put the armchair in the right corner by the fireplace and angle it.

One more comment for now, lol:) I was just in R&B two days ago and was only there for a few minutes checking out a chair Drdeb had seen online. Anyway, in the short time I was there, I passed about 3 different Quinn chairs (different fabrics). They seemed to be using it in all their groupings. I liked the chair a lot, thought the scale was nice, small enough to be really useful, but not so small as to look odd in a living room grouping. After passing it so many times, I thought I should try it for comfort and it was really nice (rather firm like much of their furniture). Just thought I'd throw out that possibility as I think it would work well in Grover's arrangement from yesterday.

I think that arrangement (yesterday) where Grover scooted the current chair to the left and floated a chair pair over by the bookcase was attractive. It would be important that the chairs floating weren't oversized chairs, but I think you'd have a lot of good options for that arrangement.

you have a great start. place couch opposite fireplace, centered to room, right at edge of carpet.. move low book shelf to right up against couch. install outlet in floor, place 2 tallish, slender lamps w white/light fabric shades on either side of shelf/ sofa table (if outlet not possible, then a couple oversized tapers in oversized holders - curly baroque forms/old gold/distressed metal). keep most books on shelves but allow some space for smaller, easel-back framed family photos. matching armchair can go to window wall at slight angle into room w a side table and 1 of the floor lamps. maybe add an ottoman (w legs, structure) w/ pop of color/pattern to this chair. coffee table is turned to line up parallel to couch - stack some awesome picture books + some larger curio of warm hued, natural material ( i.e. driftwood piece) - helps soften the many hard, smooth solid surfaces. now stair wall is available for a loveseat (in color/pattern complements new ottoman) + floor lamp + new end table (these 2 end tables can be same or diff). centered below sq windows place small console tables (maybe contemporary demuline - something "non-square"), which can complement but not match any other furniture in there - maybe painted wood. pick up lg painting's color in a couple cool (ceramic or glass, like the pc now by window) pieces for these tables. poofs can stay, just go opposite coffee table in its new spot. "shop the house," as i call it (repurposing stuff you already have): the unit under masks - try it as one piece for under sq window in living room or maybe at window wall as side table to the single chair. then get a solid server for this spot to help visually ID it as part of dining area (great deals in resale market for these). have any afghans, throws or quilts in storage? fold/drape over 1 sofa arm, drape 1 over chair back, which is now moved to window wall.

Happy July 4th to all those celebrating! I'm not an American, but since I live here, I'll be celebrating too :)

drdeb1234, I know! I agree that it would be a lot trickier with two sofas. Two Milo's chairs would be quite expensive, over 6K, since DH absolutely didn't like any of the colors that are included in the sale...I think he could live with one (if he liked the colors enough, on sale for 1.6k each), but not with two, at this price!

    Lainie D'Eon, Yes, most probably.

Ann, I liked the visual by groveraxle a lot. But to me two chairs facing the fireplace still a winner, though. Just looks better, to me, again.

Two Oliver chairs would be a very good solution. Now, my local store doesn't have them on the floor, so we weren't able to see them/test them. I'm not sure if I would order them unseen/untested. They shouldn't be much different from the sofa, but who knows? The trouble is, that if I order them in a stocked color (which wouldn't me my first choice for accent chairs), then if I were to return them, I just have to pay back the delivery fee. If, however, I ordered them in a custom color, then I have to pay 30% restocking fee. So, this is what I'm wondering about.

Quinn chair is my absolute favorite. When we started looking and I brought DH there, I was really hoping he would like it too. And he did like the comfort and the look of it, but he thought that the arms are too low. Three trips to the same store after, he still thinks that the arms are too low. I don't think I can't convince him otherwise :( Did you notice that about its arms? I agree that it's firm, but in a good way (to me).

By the way, about the sofas. They have Oliver in two lengths, two seater with 75 inches width, and a three seater with 82 inches width. My current sofa is 89 inches wide. DH wants to go with "small and cute" (his exact words).

Potentially, if I were to buy the Oliver sofa (and not the two chairs), I could switch the sofas around. I.e. Oliver goes next to the stairs, and my current one faces the fireplace, replacing the existing chair. My current sofa is two inches taller than the Oliver though, and would "block" the fireplace more.

Ti Fy, funny you'd say that. I pointed out daybeds to my husband so many times. He wants whatever seating we choose to have a back. I do think though, that a daybed would be a great look for my area, I wish we could agree on that with him :(

Hamma, they didn't have the chair drdeb had seen online either but they did have the sofa. The sales person told me the feel would be identical so I think you could be quite confident about that with the Oliver. Your room already looks slightly left justified and I wonder if this sofa idea not only won't help that, but might also create a bit of a barrier to your room entrance. That's what I like about Grover's layout. It opens up the room entrance even more than now and balances the room left to right. But, sounds like you're pretty decided on the second sofa idea, so I'll shut up.

    Hamma thanked Ann

Nooooo, I'm not decided at all. This is the first thing that my husband and I agree on, in months! I see your point and agree about the visual balance.

I am actually familiar with the shorter sofa length. Just about a month or so ago my daughter and I were shopping at R&B for many things for her home and her Hubby needed a small sofa for his office. She got one exactly the size of the smaller oliver (but it wasn't the oliver). It's nice but sort of has the look of a loveseat, if that's what you're after.

Thank you, Ann. I'm not even sure what I'm after now. I feel like I'm more confused now comparing to what I started with! Perhaps I need to step away from it all.

I'm going to put my current sofa facing the fireplace (again, we tried it before), and evaluate what I need to do.

Your own home is always the hardest, isn't it...

    last modified: 10 years ago

Yes, that's for sure (our own homes being the hardest).

It does sound like a good idea to at least turn your current sofa for a trial to see how it feels living with that for a while. Sounds like you've done that before, but I would think that trial will be helpful to your decision.

Current pillows, throw and my chair there will be replaced :).

I got a green light for two Oliver chairs, will most probably order them in the stocked color, to replace the existing chair. Given the choice, I'd probably go much bolder, but I'm worried about 1) the chair being comfortable 2) potential restocking fee 3) not too thrilled with the lead time. Will probably settle on some colorful pillows instead. I'm still loving the Calligaris side table idea. If I do get it, it will go between the two chairs.

What do you all think of this arrangement?

I think 2 olivers will be ever so much more useful than a second sofa or loveseat. But, what about the exact arrangement you are trying with just one oliver to the right of the fireplace, angled in that corner? Maybe that single oliver with color or pattern?

    Hamma thanked Ann
    last modified: 10 years ago

And, if you went with one oliver in the corner, what about backing the sofa up just a little and placing the ottomans on the fireplace side of the table? Then, moving the floor lamp by the big chair just to the right of that chair with a side table right in front of the lamp (making a grouping of the big chair, side table, and floor lamp)?

1st, have you asked your R &B if they can get an Oliver chair from another store for you to try. It is quite possible. 2nd, you have had this dilemma since February and probably before then...lead time is irrelevant when you are getting something you live. See if your R &B store can get a stock chair in for you. If they can and you live it, bite the bullet and get the color you love. N the long run, a month or two waiting will seem irrelevant.

Ann, I agree that two chairs will be more versatile, in so many different ways! If it was up to me, I suppose I wouldn't even think twice. DH likes things a certain way, I guess. He doesn't seem to like pieces that don't allow stretching and napping :). He is also quite keen on pieces of furniture "matching". So, if we get a chair, he wants two of the same, etc.

We'll play with the arrangement some more. Thanks very much for your suggestions! It's an interesting perspective.

Blue Booby, thank you! I will need to find out if they can get it for me to try in their store, that's a great idea! Yes, you're quite right, I've been at it for a while. We've lived here for a little over a year and there are a lot of rooms/areas to tackle. Some are more challenging than others.

I agree 2 chairs would be better than another couch. We have 2 of the Noland chairs from Bernhardt. DH and I are not tall but we like them because we can pull up our legs into them but they have a small footprint. Our friends who are tall love them because they are deep and have higher back ( but not too high!). http://www.bernhardt.com/product/noland/chairs-ottomans/chair

My husband installed it in a matter of minutes! Please let me know if I can help you further :)

So, my chairs were ordered! Two Oliver chairs in the stocked color. My store doesn't have the chairs, only the sofa, and they couldn't get them for me either, but I took a risk. The chairs should be pretty similar to the sofa. The textile designer I had a conversation with steered me away from the (custom) fabric I was considering. Too stiff and scratchy. The stocked fabric is supposed to be softer and provide more comfort (as DH and I experienced, when we sat on the Oliver sofa). Also got some colorful pillows on order!

Thank you so much to everyone for their suggestions, opinions and help!
