I'm not sure why you think Roman shades will not provide you adequate privacy.

are you doing the Roman shades in a sheer or semi-sheer material?

if you do the Roman shades with blackout lining, you really can't get any more privacy than that.

I have both bottom up/top down and top down only Roman shades. I do not see any pros or cons between the different opening and closing operations. I have vignettes modern Roman shades by Hunter Douglas.

the bottom up/top down Roman shades cost more. I do not know the price difference.

the only issue that I ran into was that I could not motorize the top down/bottom up shades on some narrow windows.

another consideration is the style of Roman shades that you want as well as you need to consider the manufacturer or maker. I prefer the cordless over those with cords.

Thanks Kelley. The master bedroom windows are situated such that people can see in if the shades are up from the bottom. But I sometimes want light in the bedroom without people being able to see, thus my desire to have the shades come down from the top.

I was just concerned that the mechanism for top-down/bottom-up would wear out quickly because R shades are heavier. (I'm not sure exactly how the mechanism works for top-down/bottom-up, in general, because I don't have them yet.)
