My family and I were interested in purchasing a home with a similar layout (no door to the master bathroom) some time ago and decided against it.

The reason for our decision was that the person using the sink and moving around the bathroom would create noise that would disturb the person trying to sleep in the adjacent bedroom.

I have had both ways. I like my pocket door much better;)

This sounds like a dopey idea that appeals to designers of homes ("Let's do something DIFFERENT "), not users of homes!!

We don't have a door. Didn't in the last house either. Been living this way for 17 years. Both these bedrooms are large 20' by 26' My current home has a walk in closetbetween the bath & master. Baths are large too. Another walk in on the other side of bath. I think most of the homes in my area are built this way. Gotta say it probably wouldn't work for a small bedroom and bath. We also don't have the lifestyle where we get up in the AM to shower and go to work.

We baby boomers are so trained to closing the doors behind us, how could you not have a bathroom door. This goes for both male and female. Who wants to see you do your business morning, noon, and night? Even if you live alone, I would bet you're still tempted to close the bathroom door.

We had a pocket door to the master bath in the last home. I think I closed it twice, as there was plenty of privacy without the door. We have a pocket door between the bedroom and bath in this home, and haven't yet closed it in over a year. From the bedroom, you see only pretty cabinetry, and a portion of the mirror over the vanity. The bathroom entrance is not visible from the bedroom entry. If your bath is visible from a hallway entering the bedroom, I'd probably want at least a pocket door to the bath.

before we remodeled our master bedroom and bath, we had a bathroom door, but there was an odd opening at the top of the bathroom wall, maybe four by three. (for light, maybe? no idea!) And it was annoying because you could hear bathroom noises so much more - water running, cabinets opening, shower running. I would absolutely have a door installed.

Get a really good fan. Otherwise, with no door? Be prepared for unpleasant odors wafting about the bedroom (or the rest of the house). Bathrooms need doors, that's where humans relieve themselves.

Thank you all for your fabulous feedback and great points. I’m a early riser, my husband is not. While having a second bathroom (one to call our own) will be a luxury for us, it will be relatively small (at least compared to safarispotter’s). So, I am hearing from you that, in this case, having a door is highly recommended. Both the toilet room and shower/bathtub area in the rear of the bathroom will have strong fans.
